Miss Brill
Summary: The story "Miss Brill," written by Katherine Mansfield, is the story of a woman who lives her life through the observation of others. It is written in third person, from the subjective point of view of the title character. Throughout the story, the author works to convey to the readers a true sense of the woman’s unusual personality. The short story is very effectively written in third person, how Miss Brill sees herself. Living through the conversations, lives, and actions of others, Miss Brill feels passion, excitement and sadness. She is very much taken back from her own feelings and, instead, she relies on other people’s lives to entertain her. The story is set on a Sunday afternoon, which Miss Brill has looked forward to so she can spend the afternoon in the park that is always busy with activities of the people she watches. The point of view that the author chose allows us to see Miss Brill as she sees herself, from an outside perspective. In this essay I will try and give some perspective into Mrs. Brill, the possibly egocentric people watcher. Analysis: The main character in the story, Miss Brill, takes pleasure in the smallest things. For example, she considers a park bench that she frequently sits on as her "special seat"(Pg. 2). She sees that the conductor in the story has a new jacket and in her imagination she believes that the songs he chooses mirror the actions of the people in the park, like they have their very own soundtrack. Miss Brill takes in all of the extremely small details even though she herself lacks any self-awareness, she is a great at observing the lives of others. Miss Brill may not be the most intelligent woman and many times she misinterprets a lot of the situations that are happening around her. Katherine Mansfield does a wonderful job showing her readers Miss Brill’s absence of reality in the world she watches so thoroughly. To Miss Brills, she is not just
