In Dimestore, Lee Smith shares many stories about her parents. The chapter, “Recipe Box”, focuses on Lee’s mother, Gig Smith. Smith tells us that Gig had many recipes for Appalachian dishes like venison bean soup and meat loaf. Some of these recipes were cooked for her family; some were cooked for social events. Gig herself couldn’t eat rich foods, however, she cooked for her family every day. Smith’s father never failed to praise her meals. Gig grew up on Chincoteague an island off the coast of Virginia; therefore she had many recipes for seafood dishes. The recipes for many fancy desserts, such as Lady Baltimore Cake, were passed down to Gig by wealthy family members. Lee’s favorite was the spicy pimiento cheese. Which was a simple dish that…
“To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a perfect example of how the plot progression of the story was closely related to the character development. Lee used Jean Louise, also known as “Scout” as a main model of character development, as she grows through her understandings of racism, how to handle social situations and her intelligence . The plot progression throughout the novel was very close in relationship of bildungsroman in the characters personal stories. This book being fiction is not true but it depicts how life was during the time period of the 1930’s. The characters also are very close to portraying common people of the time in Macon County of Alabama.…

Not any two characters in the novel have the same motivation for fighting. Robert E. Lee is a well-respected soldier who is nearing the end of his career. He uses the Battle at Gettysburg as one of his motivations to keep his faith. He is a heavily religious man and he lets faith play a huge part in his decisions. Lee’s home state is Virginia and becomes involved in the war when Virginia chose to take part in the war. James Longstreet has endured many hardships. His three children have died from illness the winter before the battle. He hopes for success. A lot of his ideas for how the war can be won are not current with his fellow soldiers. Joshua Chamberlain as the main voice for the Union and a significantly lower rank than the other…

In Mary E. Wilkins’ “The Revolt of ‘Mother,’” the character of Sarah Penn serves a special function. She is both representative of the women of her time and also an anomaly. Like other women of the late 1800s, Sarah is a very hard worker in her home. She lives as a servant to the dictates of her husband, and despite her painful disagreement with his actions. She continues to serve him as any other wife would serve her husband. She cooked his favorite meals, sewed his shirts, and did the many chores around the house that are expected of her. However, although representative in these ways, Sarah is also an anomaly, because even while she is serving her husband she finally decides to rebel against him after 40 years of marriage. His long unfulfilled promise of building his family a better house to live in has been postponed once again while he instead builds a new barn for his farmyard animals. Sarah determines to move the family into the barn, which is far nicer than the old house they currently inhabit. As such, her actions constitute a world-changing revolution in a society where wives never challenge their husbands’ authority or decisions.…
Cora Jenkins is seemingly difficult to define static or dynamic at first. Throughout her story, her character suffers great tragedy, and hardship. Many people might describe Cora’s character as flat, rather than round because she does not fight against the facts of life: her drunken father, sickly mother, demanding employers or unplanned pregnancy from a transient lover. Cora is steadfast in her work and love until it is impossible to keep silent and stifled any longer. She railed against fate when death struck her baby. Cora denounced the women responsible for the injustice done to Jessie, the daughter she adopted in her heart. In conclusion, Cora is a dynamic character because you understand her struggles, feel her pain and in the end, applaud…
At the age of ten, most children are dependent on their parents for everything in their lives needing a great deal of attention and care. However, Ellen, the main character and protagonist of the novel Ellen Foster, exemplifies a substantial amount of independence and mature, rational thought as a ten-year-old girl. The recent death of her mother sends her on a quest for the ideal family, or anywhere her father, who had shown apathy to both she and her fragile mother, was not. Kaye Gibbons' use of simple diction, unmarked dialogue, and a unique story structure in her first novel, Ellen Foster, allows the reader to explore the emotions and thoughts of this heroic, ten-year-old girl modeled after Gibbons' own experiences as a young girl.…
The first character we are introduced to in the novel is Robert Walton. We know this because there are a series of letters from him to his sister Margret Saville concerning his whereabouts. From reading the four letters it is apparent to the reader that Walton is an ambitious and caring man. He is articulate and eloquent especially when writing about his voyage. To the reader he appears to be very reflective in that he expresses his concern about how long it will be before he meets his sister again, this is apparent throughout all four letters and each letter is concluded in an affectionate and emotional tone.…
Mystery and suspense captured the audience or readers who set out on an endeavor to find out who is blackmailing General Sternwood and better yet, where is Regan? Though, despite any anticipation brought upon by the story, the protagonist Philip Marlowe ironically lacked mystery or intrigue. A seemingly boring man, he fights off temptation of women and sets forth to solve the task at hand. Silver Wig, the alias of Mona Mars adopted by protagonist Phillip Marlowe in Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep, was a seemingly crucial character in the novel though lacked a similar importance in the story’s film adaptation. When the knightly Marlowe was captured in a surprise attack, Chandler writes that Mona is the hero dressed in green with lake-blue eyes to untie the knots that bound him. However, film director Howard Hanks created a contrasting situation in which Vivian Regan reappears to save Marlowe leaving no credit due to Mrs. Mars. This scene where Marlowe and Mona first meet may have numerous similarities in plot and dialogue, though their overall meanings differ greatly.…
