Mrs. Mullr In John Patrick Shanley's Doubt
In John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt, Mrs. Muller responds to Sister Aloysius’s insinuations of “an improper relationship” (vii) between Father Flynn and her son Donald by saying, “Why you need to know something like that for sure when you don’t? Please, Sister. You got some kind a righteous cause going with this priest and now you want to drag my boy into it”(vii). Mrs. Muller is questioning Sister Aloysius’s intentions. Mrs. Muller is considering that Sister Aloysius’s motives are personal, “Look, Sister, I don’t want any trouble, and I feel like you’re on the march somehow”(vii). She feels her son is being used as a pawn with no regard for his future or safety exclaming, “My husband would kill that child over a thing like that”(vii). She

Sister Aloysius, multiple times throughout the book, lies and deceives to to try prove that Father Flynn made sexual advances to Donal Muller. Sister Aloysius is bearing false witness, therefor, she is violating the ninth commandment. One instance where Sister Aloysius bears false witness is in her conversation with Mrs. Muller. Sister Aloysius says “I’m concerned, to be frank, that Father Flynn may have made advances on your son.” (Shanley page 42). Sister Aloysius then admits to Mrs. Muller that she has no evidence to back up her sever accusation against Father Flynn. Another occasion…

When the inspector tells Mrs Birling that the girl was pregnant she tries to pass on any blame on her to the father of the child. Unaware of who the father is, the inspector gets Mrs Birling to turn on her son and get her to blame him. “Who is to blame then” this allow Mrs Birling to feel in power again as she is being asked her opinion and she takes full advantage of this blaming the father of the child that the audience knows to be Eric. “But suppose we do what then?” The inspector is having Mrs Birling blame her son entirely for what has happened and unknowingly decides on a harsh punishment for him “he be compelled to confess in public”. This is ironic as at the beginning of the play Mr Birling is telling Gerald how he will get a knighthood “so long as we behave ourselves, don’t get into the police court or start a scandal” and what Mrs Birling is suggesting would be a scandal and may ruin Mr Birling's chance of a Knighthood.…

The conversational form is a self-conscious debate about their roles as fiancés, wives and mothers, as well as their relationships with each other. Critics would notice that the novel projects two compelling arguments: the plot of women corruption and seduction: a parallel plot revolving around the fate of the powerful female circle, bounded by an ideology of "sisterhood" - which makes the story possible in the most concrete way.…

In the play “Othello”; when the fair beauty Desdemona elopes with a dark skinned man she is disowned by her father. The marriage of a white woman and Black man was unheard of in that society and in that context morally it was a huge insult and sin. “O heaven! How got she out? O treason of the blood! Fathers, from hence trust not your daughters’ minds”, the use of punctuation like exclamation marks shows the intensity of Brabantio’s (Desdemona’s father’s) words. This mistrust and abandonment is one of the two main reasons why Desdemona’s and Othello’s relationship fails. They have no external support or protection. “Guess who’s coming to dinner is set in California in 1967 in America. A white woman marrying an African American man is also very shocking in this context. However when Joey tells her parents of her plans to be wed to a “Negro”, they may be apprehensive by they do not abandon her at all. Her families values are more modern and open minded than the typical American family and so Joe’s own personal context allows her to have a support network. Joey’s mother is told first of the plans to be married and she is shocked but not angry nor betrayed, “Doc, Doc, Doctor John Prentice, I’m so pleased to meet you. Well I suppose it would be alright if I said my goodness, oh my goodness.” The repetition of the words Doc and my goodness communicates…

By using allusions, Miller was able to place a contemporary event in the past, making his play an allegory. He parallels the choices of the judges like Danforth to contemporary judges. The same goes for the witch trials and characters like John Proctor who claimed innocence. The audience recognizes the choice that the characters within the play have to make and how difficult it will be, but the audience also judges those characters for some of the choices they make such as when Danforth decides to continue the witch trials when their contemporaries are making some of the same mistakes. Miller shows his audience that it is difficult to make decisions that may compromise one’s own morals, in the past or in contemporary times with his usage of allegorical allusions.…

The connection between mother and son is untradeable. There is inevitable love that pushes a mother to do absolutely anything because of the maternal instinct that is bestowed within. Unconditional motherly love releases the “super power” inside a desperate mother in need of her child. In the novel “Son,” Lois Lowry uses characterization in the main character, Claire, to demonstrate her courage, desperateness, and mental, as well as physical, strength that strives her to find her son. Born in an utopian society, Claire is assigned her role as a birthmother. After something goes terribly wrong in her birth, she is reassigned to the fish hatchery. After overhearing her son is number thirty-six in the Nurturing center, she creates a friendship with the Nurturer so she can secretly see her growing son. The village elders decide, at one year old, he is not suitable for a family and would be killed. The Nurturer’s son, Jonas, runs off with the baby and Claire sets off on a ship to find them. Her body washes up on shore of another village without any memory of what happened. After listening to a little girls’ conversation, Claire thinks “This baby in my belly makes me forgetful, one little girl had said. Claire, working now with Alys, preparing the herbs for Bethan’s mother, understood what the child was pretending. Why did it make Claire feel so unbearably sad?”(Lowry 153). Lois Lowry uses indirect characterization to illustrate…

Parental guidance and support are key components of the foundation of a child’s growth and development. Without either, a child cannot grow and develop properly. In her novel The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison examines the effect of different mothers on their respective children through the characters of Mrs. MacTeer and Mrs. Breedlove. Throughout the novel, both characters express their thoughts and feelings through words, with Mrs. MacTeer having a few fussy soliloquies and Mrs. Breedlove having a few interior monologues to get their points across. Although Mrs. MacTeer and Mrs. Breedlove are two entirely different individuals, their respective fussy soliloquies and interior monologues greatly reflect one another.…
