Unit 529: Mange physical resources
Outcome 1: Understand the importance of sustainability when using physical resources.
1.1 explain the importance of using sustainable resources.
Answer:
Sustainable resource management deals with the protection of all natural resources. People investigate how we use resources, how we should use them (which isn’t always how we do use them), what affects them, and how they can be best protected and preserved. They try to manage the way people and organizations interact with natural resources to ensure their long-term availability. The word itself is the key. Sustainability presumes something or products can be created indefinitely. The management aspect is to calculate all the variables and see if it can be created with the least amount of energy. It is also recognised how the human energy input is required to be part of the process ie, labour calculations. Along the line of this action/reaction there will be losses. Unfortunately because we live in a highly political society, interventions occurs either for the benefit of the whole or possibly on rare occasions to the greatest good for all.
1.2 explain the potential impact of resource use on the environment.
Answer:
The environmental impacts are straightforward, and thus a more obvious target for policies aiming to reduce the environmental impacts from resource use. The use of fossil fuels and global warming potential and potential acidifying effect. Use of specific metals, where there is a clear and linear relationship to environmental impacts from metal extraction and refining. A reduction in the use of these metals will lead to a direct reduction in the associated impacts. Area occupation, where it is the resource use itself that is of environmental concern. A reduction in area occupation will reduce the pressure on biodiversity. Construction materials, where the resource use drives the waste stream, albeit mostly with a significant delay
