,'Britain is attempting to opt out of a European initiative enabling anyone to delete their personal details from online service providers
The debate reflects growing tensions between freedom of expression and privacy as increasing numbers of people complain that their online reputation is being corroded by outdated, inaccurate or malicious information that cannot be removed.
"not be absolute" and would be assessed in relation to other rights, such as freedom of expression,
"[There will be] no power to remove it from third parties but if a company has given it to another [firm] without asking if they can sell it, then the individuals' rights will be re-enforced."
The right will not apply to journalistic archives. We think the most responsible service providers will offer the right to erasure. Where people are dealing with irresponsible service providers it may be that the national data protection authorities take action."
"We know from the efforts of well-resourced and motivated individuals that it can in fact be impossible to remove information from the internet once it has been posted.

John Seigenthaler Sr. is a retired journalist who founded the Freedom Forum First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University. He wrote a short essay called “A False Wikipedia ‘Biography,’” that was published in USA today in November of 2005 (543). In this essay he shares his personal story of internet character assassination. Someone posted a fake biography of John Seigenthaler Sr. on Wikipedia saying he was involved in the Kennedy assassinations. It was there for 132 days and spread to other websites such as answers.com and reference.com, slandering his name. It was difficult to track the culprit since the author was anonymous and Federal privacy laws protect the identity of a company’s customers.…

This to me is the biggest point. Having worked within the Intelligence Environment for some years of my military time it amuses and baffles me that people get so annoyed over what they feel is their personal data being used and abused. One of our biggest flaw as Humans is to believe we are each individually so important that everything we ever put online is of interest to many millions of people, (Take the phenomenon that is twitter as an example) when in reality nothing at all you say or do on line is. Yes the sites you click on are monitored to target advertising etc. but that is not you personally they are looking at it is just a number. Be that an IP address or area code to post junk mail to.…

There are many problems that can result from postings on the Internet. These range from humiliation to unfounded accusations and more. In her essay “The Flip Side of Internet Fame,” Jessica Bennett details problems that some people have experienced as a result of postings that others have made. She describes problems that happen because some websites permit anonymous posts. She also gives examples from the past that show some of the histories of public shaming. Bennett wants people to be aware of these problems, to understand why they are difficult to prosecute, and that they can remain online for a long time.…

The Internet provides a growing platform for inaccurate, untrue and questionable information. On the upside, the miracle of Internet connectivity speeds peoples access to the information, knowledge and insights that contribute to humanities social and intellectual evolution. It also helps sweep aside information gatekeepers in positions of power whose “arrogant . . . unimaginative and shortsighted” approach to information has traditionally promoted their own interests and attitudes toward control (Lovett 16). Lovett states that “the right to free speech begins and ends with the First Amendment, but there is a vast middle where our freedom of speech is protected by our capacity to listen and accept that people disagree” (18). The First Amendment’s protections have always put a great deal of responsibility in the hands of the people and now they have more of that power…

More than anything else, conflicting perspectives are the result of bias or self-interest. Conflicting perspectives are prevalent in our society and individuals’ perspectives are always going to be subjective as their personal paradigms, context and profession invariably influence their interpretation. Geoffrey Robertson’s Trials of OZ and Diana In the Dock: Does Privacy Matter? in The Justice Game primarily constructed as personal retrospectives demonstrate how conflicting perspectives are the result of bias or self-interest. Radio National’s Rear Vision Program explores the ideological dichotomy between the media and privacy whilst opposing views regarding censorship are explored in the Sydney Morning Herald’s (SMH) newspaper article Is Wikileaks a force for good? (July, 2011) also represent that conflicting perspectives are the result of bias or self-interest.…

For the past twenty or so years information has largely been stored in digital form, providing the current generation of digital natives with access to more and more information in recent years. With this new flow of information available to the public has come increased censoring by the government. However, this is not a new issue as some might believe. Since the first primitive government was established information has been shielded and manipulated from the every day citizens of the world by those in power. The cause fought against information censorship enjoys the same past. For as long as information has been censored there have been those who have fought against it (Newth, 2010). This issue has arisen particularly in the United States, as some believe access to any information that exists is a right protected by the Constitution.…

However freedom of speech is not absolute. The word “abridging” in the Free Speech Clause suggests that government cannot deprive the right to freedom of speech; but at the same time the suggestion is unclear about whether the government can put restrictions on how “free” the speech can be. Most people when mention the word “speech”, usually have the tendency to think of spoken words and often neglect the existence of…
