Reggie Miller. Record Breaking. Crippled. For most of you in the audience, when you think or talk of Reggie, 1 of 3 things comes to your head, UCLA, the Indiana Pacers, or 3 pointers. But did you know that as a child, Reggie was born with deformities in his hips that restricted his walking?…
We’ve allowed a natural approach to language instruction to dominate our schools, hoping our English learners “will just figure it out.” (SCOE, 2009) This approach suggested by Kevin Clark proposes that teachers explicitly teach ELL by giving them a set of skills. Teacher will have to teach students not just vocabulary, but the sound system of language, the words and their word parts and meanings, and also rules for structuring sentences grammatically. Teaching students from this perspective can support a deeper understanding of the language. When the concept is thoroughly supported by background knowledge, explanation as to why, activities that strengthen skills, and consistency in lesson structure that follows this pattern, students are more likely to understand the concept and create a platform from which to launch higher level thinking and conclusions on following concepts and content area. Students learn more efficiently when they have prior knowledge on a presented concept. If the student can link content to a concept that they gained from previous knowledge on from their own unique background or culture, it will inevitably spark interest in that subject area. By sparking interest the teacher is now adding value to the lesson. Since students synonymize interest with value, the teacher would prove effective. Now a sense of purpose has now been infused into the lesson, and the student/students may begin to contribute more. (NCREL, 1990)…
A study of a three year old Chinese girl named Jasmine, focused on the semantics of her learning English as a second language. She was the only participant in the study who was learning a second language. Others in the study consisted of the teachers, interns, children in the class, and the observers of the study. Her native language was Chinese, which is not very similar to English at all. She came into her preschool program not knowing any other language but Chinese and also having a past bad experience at a prior preschool.…
Before taking AP Lang, I considered English to not only be my least favorite subject, but the subject I performed the poorest at as well. English to me was a malevolent thing that followed me around everywhere, around every corner. It was a formidable foe, a task greater than learning to tie my shoes. I could not grasp the ambiguous logic that English contained. Before taking AP Lang, I did not know what a “pronoun” was, or that apostrophes meant that a word was either possessive or a contraction, concepts many elementary schoolers would find rudimentary.…
In April, I was given the opportunity to work with several English language learners at P.S.189. I was able to work with Mrs. Bogue’s Kindergarten class and Mrs. James first grade classroom. During my visits, i was allowed to select students to partake in literacy and language activities. The teacher’s informed me of the students who were English language learners . I asked Mrs.Bogue and later Mrs.James to tell me a brief description of the students that I would engage in activities with. The children that I was able to work with during my fieldwork experience are as follows;…
Students that are considered to be ELL students have specific tests and procedures that must be followed by schools and teachers in order to properly assess each student proficiency level in English language. After interviewing the ELL coordinator for our school, assessing the ELL student gives both the home and school environment the information needed to develop a plan to to educate each ELL student in the 21st Century. In this essay, it will examine what test are used and who conducts the test, the methods and procedures used for ongoing classroom assessment of the students, how oral language is assessed, how standardized testing and how and when the exit testing is completed for the school district.…
The Milgram experiment, as it is now called, was considered a turning point in social psychology and the science of obedience. In a new study from Poland, a group of researchers wanted to see if the premise held up. That is, 50 years later, would people still respond to an authority figure in the same way as they did in Milgram's original experiment? "Upon learning about Milgram's experiments, a vast majority of people claim that 'I would never behave in such a manner,'" study co-author Tomasz Grzyb, a social psychologist at the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poland, said in a statement.…

Today I was placed in Mrs. Perez classroom which consists of toddlers ages three and four. Considering that it was a nice day outside the lead teacher, Mrs. Perez instructed the two assistants and an aide as well as an older teenager who I believe was a volunteer to take the children out to enjoy it. She mentioned to me she wanted to take advantage of the extra help she had so she can get going on some activities she was trying to get together. I offered to stay in and help this time instead of following to observe the children at play. She just asked me to do basic stuff like many copies of papers that had huge letters on it with some sort of cartoon next to it (Queen for Q, R for rat and S for Sun I recall) and cut out some letters shapes.…
In the first part of the experiment, each child was tested specifically in a fixed order: accent familiarization, pre-accuracy trials, accuracy familiarization, and post-accuracy trials. The children then watched as two speakers, one with a Spanish accent and the other with no accent, labeled trivial items. The participants are asked who they preferred. Next, the one of the speakers starts to occasionally mislabel an item. The participants are again asked who they preferred despite occasional mistakes. Then for the second part of the experiment, children were also tested on accent familiarization, accuracy familiarization, and post-accuracy trials. After, the children listen to 2 speakers of different accents label simple items. The speakers both alternated between correct and incorrect labels.…
Subsequent lessons should contain affixes raising her awareness through examples. An examination of Elizabeth's writing for parts of speech provides more insight into potential areas for improvement. Her sentences adequately express her thought following an S-V-O format and included a few propositional phases “I have apples in my house” despite this, her writing lacks interest. She would benefit from lessons on adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions making paragraphs more fluid and enjoyable to read. Though Elizabeth is rarely able to articulate correct grammatical terminology, she is acquiring a solid foundation of the English language for future learning. Apparent in her ability to compare and contrast English language and grammar rules to her native Spanish language. With just six months of ESL classes, including two months of conversational tutoring, I am impressed with her progress. It is a shame; her desire to learn is unmistakable. However, she only qualifies for nine months of free ESL classes, and she cannot afford to…

Individuals going into the field of school psychology will quickly realize the significance of linguistics in language development. It is essential that workers within this field are prepared to meet the tasks that they are about to come across. Furthermore, with the ever growing population of ESL students(English as Second Language) it is imperative that the school psychologist is capable of analyzing and diagnosing any problems the students may have. Having this background in Psycholinguistics will help the school psychologist break down the various cognitive elements to the student, such as pragmatics, syntax, and semantics.…
Students do not have to do anything in response to the listening text. Often students' facial expression and body language will betray what they have understood. Activities of this…
my students’ attention in class? To explain these puzzles, my team and I did a research, finding that teachers who are courageous enough to break the routine and full of originality enjoy much more popularity. To achieve this requirement, in my opinion, we need not noly a powerful knowledge base, but also a positive and open attitude towards life. Since both education and language are my favorites, and the Foreign English Teaching is just a combination of my two points of interest, I am eager to have a deeper research in this field to find more lively and effective ways of English…
