Ms. Annie's Short Story, New Directions
Sometimes in life when you find that times are difficult to get through, asking for others help might be a wise choice. However, always relying on people will cause you to forget what you can accomplish by yourself. You need to rely on your parents during childhood, but when people grow up and become independent, they need to start doing things by themselves. When changes occur in your life, the only thing you can depend on are your own skills. You can improve your life if you stop relying on others; therefore, you will become more independent.

Imagine if you need to go to a city that you are unfamiliar with by yourself to find a job or go to university, and you have only a little money. This is a common situation that many university students and adults need to face. Students have the support of their parents, but when you get to work, life only gets harsher. Ms. Annie was in a familiar situation with her husband leaving her with two children, and she didn’t have a job. In her life before, she only needed to do the housework and care for the babies, and her husband earned the money. Without her husband, she didn’t have a way to earn money, and her husband took most of the money in the house. Obviously, everything seemed so miserable and hopeless. I like to try and figure things out by myself and teach myself how to do things. When something doesn’t work, I try to figure out different ways to fix it before I ask anyone to help me. Most of the times I can figure it out on my own. Another way I am independent like Lyddie is that I never want help on my homework. I like to do it by myself and learn from my mistakes. If I depend on people to help me all the time, I would never learn anything and I would never become independent.…

Throughout this journal, I will discuss examples of walking in someone else’s shoes. First off, one person that shows that people should walk in someone else’s shoes is the Ewell family. To begin, one way that the Ewell family are a prime example is because there are eight children in the Ewell family. Since the children do not have a mother, Mayella Ewell has to step forward to fill in the roll. Many people do not understand the stress that Mayella is under when taking care of seven other children. Many people consider her as pathetic and that she is a wuss for telling but, they do not understand that she has no life other than taking care of her siblings. Secondly, another explanation is that the children have no education and the father spends any money he gets…

My dad is a very strong man, physically and mentally. Whenever I needed advice or help with something, he showed me the correct way to handle things. He brought me up to be just like him. Being around my dad all the time, and just doing things like he does makes me believe that with anything I need done, I can do myself and that I don't need anyone's help. I inherited his worth ethic as well. I try to keep a job just so I won't need anyone's help with anything. I have a huge ego and a lot of pride. I hate asking anyone for anything. Seeing my dad do everything he needs himself, made me really want to grow up and do the same thing. As I got older, when I started working, I didn't want help with anything. Once I realized that I could do everything on my own, I figured I shouldn't have to ask anyone for anything.…

After reading this passage it helped me reflect on myself. The reason was because I could relate to Tiffany Anderson. I think I could relate to her because my first job was working in a mall at The Limited. I had an exciting job to be a sales associate, and sometimes helped unpack stock for new floor events. Even though I have a son now, I remember the reason why I wanted a job. To have things and to not rely on my parents support. Basically to feel important in the world and go out and hang with my friends. My parents only gave us our needs, for I always knew my wants were only rewarded if I worked for it. Truly there are many people that go through a lot more than I did, at that time in my life. I have been thankful that I had support from my family and still do. I think a soon as Tiffany Anderson received the note, she changed as a person. Even though she may not understood the writing, however she did have some ideas. She mentioned the imagination of a “women, my age but skinny, with sunken eyes and black hair, locked into a blindingly hot factory…

One night she is lying miserable in bed, sick. She then becomes conscious of the fact that she is not despondent because she feels ill, but because there is no one there to comfort her. She realizes now that this is the way it has always been, she has known no other way. Throughout her childhood she was raised with the notion that someday somehow she would be whisked away by her prince charming and live happily ever after. She did not know what it was like to be truly independent. Nor was she raised to be comfortable with it. Boys were trained to be self-sufficient early on while her parents and society taught her that she did not need to be self-reliant; that she only needed to hold on until her "savior" came.…
