The MASTER OF SCIENCE in MATHEMATICS Program
OBJECTIVES OF M.S. (MATHEMATICS) PROGRAM The M.S. (Mathematics) Program is designed primarily for those seeking advanced mathematical training in preparing for doctoral studies (whether it be in mathematics, statistics or some related field), for research, for teaching (senior level undergraduate mathematics courses.) ADMINISTRATION OF THE M.S. (MATHEMATICS) The M.S. (Mathematics) Program shall be administered by the Graduate Committee of the Department of Mathematics which will be headed by the Chairman of the department. Each area of concentration is coordinated by a Program Adviser. ADMISSION INTO THE M.S. (MATHEMATICS) PROGRAM Admission into the M.S. (Mathematics) Program requires (1) a bachelor's degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, (2) completion of Advanced Calculus (beyond the usual undergraduate calculus series), Abstract Algebra (introduction to groups, rings, fields, etc.) and Linear Algebra, Matrices and Complex Analysis and (3) satisfaction of additional University requirements such as a health clearance and other special admission requirements that may be imposed by the Graduate Committee such as the passing of an examination in the basic concepts of algebra and analysis and/or fluency in English. A student who has not previously taken up all the courses listed above but whose record, in the opinion of the Graduate Committee of the Math Department, shows some promise is required to make up for the deficiency before formal admission into the M.S. (Mathematics) Program. Usually this means having to enroll in and pass some of our undergraduate math courses. Students with deficiencies must allow an extra semester to the length of their anticipated stay in the M.S. (Mathematics) Program. Each application for admission into the M.S. (Mathematics) Program must be accomplished in the official College application form and

Please indicate on the line beneath each course the course or courses from your transcript that you feel are equivalent to each prerequisite. You need not have satisfied all requirements in order to be admitted conditionally as a graduate student. If conditionally admitted, you may clear up one course deficiency (specifically STAT 381) by taking the necessary course at CSULB; this course will not count as part of the 30 units required for the MS degree. If you have to take more than 1 prerequisite course, you can take them through what is called open university at CSULB (or another campus) and then apply when you are ready.…

The most severe form of punishment of all legal sentences is that of death. This is referred to as the death penalty, or capital punishment; this is the most severe form of corporal punishment, requiring law enforcement officers to actually kill the offenders. It has been banned in numerous countries, in the United States, however an earlier move to eliminate capital punishment has now been reserved and more and more states are resorting to capital punishment for such serious offenders namely murder. "Lex talionis," mentioned by the Bible encourages "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" mentality, and people have been using it regularly for centuries. We use it in reference to burglary, adultery, and various other situations, although, some people enforce it on a different level, some people use it in reference to death. An individual may steal from those who have stolen from him, or an individual wrongs those who have wronged him, but should an individual have the right to kill to seek retaliation? Four issues are on the hot topic in the United States, stirring up America's feeling towards this issue. We have a certain privilege in our own lives, but should the lives of others belong to us as well? Do we have the right to decide on the lives of others; of people we may not even know? If we find someone guilty of murder, we sentence him to death. This makes us murders ourselves, but is there possibility in justifying these acts? Those who assist in the death penalty; are they not partners in crime? Is death penalty a cruel and unusual punishment or is it now just a necessary tool in the war on crime?…
