The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius was 2000 years ago on April 24th, year of 79. The eruption devastated many cities and villages. One of the cities included Pompeii a town in Italy. In this Time the Roman Empire was in rule in the area. The eruption happened when earthquakes released clouds of smoke and ash that burnt the surroundings the Pyroclastics missed the town fortunately. Then a wave of lava from the magma chamber bursted from the volcano's mouth. The lava traveled at rapid speed. ~Armeet Chhina

“Come on we can’t be afraid of no pebbles we are gladiator-” then he gets hit by a huge chunk of coal. I chose this quote because it shows how powerful this volcano is. The Volcanic ash that erupted from the mouth of the stratovolcano condensed into pebbles of ash, and chunks of coal from the volcano. At that time the lava with high viscosity had not erupted yet. The VEI of the volcano on the convergent boundary between the African and Eurasian plate is 7 on the scale. ~Armeet Chhina

People in Pompeii had no idea what was going on because there was no word in latin for volcano and they thought that Mt. Vesuvius was just a mountain and they didn’t know that Mt. Vesuvius was a volcano. the people in

As the ship crept around the stretch of land that shielded the bay of Pompeii, all eyes turned onto the small town. Horror and anxiety could be seen in all the sailors’ eyes, especially Tarquinius. What they were looking at was not a small town, but instead a lack of a town. Hordes of ash covered what used to be Pompeii. Nothing was left to be seen. Only silence remained. The year was now 79 AD, the year in which Vesuvius erupted and effectively wiped Pompeii completely off the map.…

When the eruption hit Pompeii on August 24, 79AD no one in Pompeii could have guessed what would follow. Around 1:00 Pm a firestorm of fatal gasses and molten lava erupted from Vesuvius, spreading fear and terror into the hearts of Pompeiians as they thought that the gods had abandoned them and the world was coming to an end. Vesuvius entered the history of volcanology with the eruption of 79 AD burying towns and making history as one of the most fascinating natural disasters ever to hit this planet. The eruption destroyed the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplonti and Stabiae and caused the death of thousands of people, including Pliny the Elder. Earthquakes occurred frequently before the eruption in 79 AD but the locals disregarded them, as they were extremely common in this area. An earthquake was recorded in 62 AD on the 5th of Febuary. This earthquake caused serious damage in both Pompeii and Herculaneum, and minor damage in Nuceria and Naples, which was where the Emperor, Nero at this time, was performing in the theatre. According to writer Seneca, the earthquakes lasted for several days and it wasn’t until the 4th day that they began to die down. Seneca also said that he “presumed that the earthquake swarm occurred at a shallow depth in the Vesuvian area”. People of the time were very surprised at the extreme extent of the damage.…

Although other cities were buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum is the hardest to excavate. Pompeii, a nearby town, also has a lot of information, but is only buried under 6 meters of volcanic rock while Herculaneum is buried under 20 meters. Herculaneum has significant historical importance. As it was preserved under layers of volcanic materials, it has frozen a point in time which historians today can collect information from. Herculaneum serves to fill in important information on the history of Rome such as the condition of the civilians, the general lifestyle, religion and…

Helens erupted. This eruption helped adjust historians’ idea of what happened to Mt. Vesuvius. Mount St. Helens experienced a pyroclastic flow causing the whole north side of the volcano to collapse. This event was extremely similar to the definition that Pliny the Younger provided to Mt. Vesuvius back in 79CE. Since these two eruptions were so similar, historians went back and tested remains of Mt. Vesuvius’ eruption. After the examinations, they finally concluded that the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius was a pyroclastic flow. Pyroclastic flows are dense mixtures of hot, dry rock fragments and hot gas. The temperatures of these rocks are extremely hot enough to kill a…

Had there been people at work on the volcano’s face or lower slopes there would have been little hope for them, these lives were saved by prior planning and prediction of the eruption resulting in the evacuation of the local area.…

For my Latin Forum Project I did research on the destruction of Pompeii. The destruction began on August 24, 79 AD at 8:00 a.m. with a series of small earthquakes which were common in this area. These earthquakes continued on for five hours. By one p.m. smoke filled the air above the nearby volcano Mt. Vesuvius and soon it turned to dark black smoke with larger earthquakes following shortly after. Two hours later the sky was raining hot ash. At three p.m. there was hot ash and earthquakes destroying the city. By five p.m. there were raging fires burning the house to the ground. The dark black smoke cloud coming from Mt. Vesuvius grew larger and larger. Chunks of burning rocks destroyed many houses. Three hours later…
