In Shakespeare’s play much ado about nothing many of the characters go through huge changes in their attitude though out the play, especially Benedick? He is a powerful yet sympathetic character, who develops throughout the course of the play. He is seen as a ‘player’, a man who does not want to get married have children and someone who doesn’t believe in love. The only character that was show love was Beatrice who has the same attitude toward life as him which cause there relationship to be a love hate. Eventually, he opens up his eyes to love. As the play progresses to the end of the play he not only understands that he loved Beatrice all along, and decides to settle down and marry her. He actually supports others who wish to marry, which is a huge change in attitude for Benedick.
Benedick is a fun loving a man known as a ‘player’, who does not want to settle down and who does not believe in love. “But it is certain I am loved of all ladies, only you excepted, and I would I could find in my heart that I had not a hard heart, for, truly, I love none” Benedick says to Beatrice that he believes he is loved by ‘all ladies’ apart from her. “I may go the finer, I will live a bachelor” Benedick believes that he will live forever as a bachelor and will never get married.
Benedick was a loving friendly man and was well-loved by all, “No glory lives behind the back of such. And, Benedick, love on; I will requite thee, taming my wild heart to thy loving hand: If thou dost love, my kindness shall incite thee. To bind our loves up in a holy band” says Beatrice, first time of her showing a slight affection of Benedick. At first not sure of how much she loves him. Yet, when he finds his true feelings “I do love nothing in the world so well as you: is not that strange?” says Benedick to Beatrice when he realises his love for her.
