Mudik is an Indonesian term used to describe when someone who lives away from home is coming home for the holidays. This tradition is often seen during great holidays, such as Christmas and Eid-ul-Fitr. In Indonesia, for example, as many as 30 million people go mudik on Eid-ul-Fitr in 2011. Most people do mudik activity because they want to reunite with their families after being away for working or studying for a long time.
Some societies think that mudik is a sacred tradition, because they usually only do that once a year on the great holidays. At that time, they feel that they need to see their family members and strengthen the relationship with them by spending time together. Moreover, those holidays are very essential in both culture and religion matters, and therefore, people are willing to go for a long distance trip home to celebrate them.
Many people living far away from home in big cities do not only do mudik as a tradition, but also as a reason to run away from urban life and to feel again the atmosphere of the home where their childhood memories be. For instance, the stress I had brought from the urban city suddenly disappeared when I ate my mother’s cooking that I always missed.
Nowadays, the number of people go mudik is increasing over time. One of the reasons is the increasing level of income, so more people can afford to buy travel tickets or even drive their own private vehicles as transport means. An aim they have which is to be back again with their families. They will go through any constrains only to feel again their home sweet home atmosphere.

Tradition is a funny thing to think about, what individual people do and hold close to their hearts. The favorite tradition in my family is every year when my aunt, grandma and I go on a vacation, we never go to the same place but we explore the world and gain new experiences together. This particular trip we decided to go on a trip to Kailua, Hawaii. If you have ever been to Hawaii you would understand what I mean when I say there is something in the air. When you walk out side the air is lined with a wonderful tropical blend of ocean breeze, mangos, and a balmy smell of sunscreen and sunshine. One particular day we decided to go on…

We began our journey in a group of 14 in a 14-Seater Mahindra bus. Our first destination was Rampur almost 300 kilometers from Haridwar. Rampur is the most affordable human settlement for people who come on pilgrimage to Kedarnath. As the altitude increased the temperature decreased. After a long 15 hour bus journey we finally made to Rampur at around midnight. The small village was lively with small time businessmen and children. Everyone was trying to make the most of this pilgrimage season. The rooms, that are otherwise available for only Rs. 200-400, in this season cost around Rs. 1200. No matter how much you bargain it is impossible to spend a night under 1000 rupees. A bus journey on such roads can prove just as tiring as a 10 mile trek. We were all zonked out and after a light supper everyone slept like a logs. Everyone except me.…

The cause for cultural loss is attributed to the out migration of old resident Newars, decreasing socio-cultural activities in the square, loss of unwritten socio-cultural norms and rules, the vertical extension of the buildings, increasing fragmentation of land ownership and privatization of the inner public courtyards by blocking the access due to security concerns. Such relationship in case of the new resident group is found to be guided by everyday function related to the use of public resources available to them. It is found that the feeling of belonging for the old population groups is limited to their individual dwelling areas and not to the entire neighborhood. They are found reasonably territorial for the spaces in front of their individual dwelling (figure f.1). These spaces are just beyond the raised plinth or platform and marked by power-stones. This sense of territorial feeling was coincided with the on site-observation of using these quarters of spaces for their caste specific socio-cultural rituals as exemplified by Dapan Pooja, a ritual of Maharjan Caste ( picture P.2). In the picture, it can be observed that the area used for the Dapan…
