MUET Writing (Paper 800/4) Tips
How to improve your English essay writing skills?

Write Grammatically Correct Essay
The English grammar level presented in the essay decides whether it is a well-written or low-graded essay. A grammatically incorrect essay distracts the readers’ attention from the content written by the writer. So, you should read the Important English Grammar Notes for Essay Writing posted on this blog previously. In addition to that, you should always avoid doing minor errors like first-draft slips and gross errors like tense and subject-verb agreement.

Use Thesaurus to Increase Vocabulary
Thesaurus comes in handy to increase your vocabulary. You should try to replace the general words with the more specific ones. For instance, replace the word ‘important’ with the word ‘vital’ when you want to say something that is very important and necessary, and if not done correctly there could be serious problems. Besides that, you are suggested to reference the thesaurus to expand your vocabulary. Try to replace some adjectives with others which are similar in meaning like replacing the word ‘boring’ with ‘mundane’ or ‘tedious’. However, using bombastic words in your writing with the only purpose is to impress the examiners in order to score well is not recommended.

Write Journal or Blog in English
Since MUET Writing Test tests your English writing skills, you should be able to write your essay in English. So, writing journal or diary or blogging in English can brush up your English writing skills. Try to write in grammatically correct sentences instead of using broken or casual English in your journal or blog. You should also train yourself to plan or outline and organize your essay before writing it. Writing spontaneously may keep the flow but the essay written may be a mess. So, it is a good habit to organize your essay before it is written.

Some of the most common mistakes are usually small and careless mistakes. I have seen some essays that can be too wordy by containing words that do not add value to the subject. Like, “This statement is not very influential because he gives no evidence that this statement is true.” When you can say it like, “This…

When writing an essay there really is more to it than just writing words down and making sure the words is used correctly. When someone is having thoughts they need to write them down and just go from there. At first it may not be perfect, but the writer can always go back and change the errors that need to be fixed. Before reading this I figured it was going to be about bad writing and one should not worry if it is not perfect. This made me realize that it is not about how you write, but what you write about and how to get your thoughts across.…

Kimberly Tan, the Author of “Why Do We Care About Grammar?” explains the usage and value of grammar. Tan states in her opinion about grammar that “people need to realize that grammar is there for the sole purpose of clarity and that it has no value outside of what it attempts to convey” (Tan). Tan argues that grammar should not have a set of concrete rules and that grammar is not the important part in the end, it is the content that is being expressed that truly matters. I personally agree with what Tan has said about grammar. Grammar should be used more so for clarification when writing an essay, we should be focusing more on the meaning of the essay than grammar.…

Every one of has heard it a hundred of times that: every single rules of English grammar matters. We all want to write a good paper without any flaws and errors. The problem is that writing a good paper is seldom fun. Even though my English skills have been improving significantly, I still need to work on choosing accurate words to have a better preparation for ESL 273 or any further English classes. As I develop my essay, I need to think carefully about my choices of words. Indeed, I need to improve on giving more choices words or vocabularies and clarifying more meaning so that I would make my paragraphs become more interesting and fully support the main point. For example, in paper “Cooperation between Countries” I wrote this sentence “Ultimately, cooperation between countries has many benefits that they can learn from it.” I wrote a word “benefits” where I should have write a word “aspects” or “they” as “we”… Thus, language skills always require learners to practice constantly to ensure better performances. Therefore, I need to move onto ESL 273, so I can make a change to improve my English.…

Writing is a process in which people put their thoughts onto paper to express ideas, concerns and sometimes apprehensions. People from different backgrounds and cultures express themselves in numerous ways giving the readers insight into their world. Being an Indian who has studied in a school founded by the British, I have been introduced to a foreign style of writing which is remarkably different than college level papers in the United States. My first encounter with college level essay writing was when I filled out the Common Application essays. The topics were primarily about introspection and using my voice to tell my story.…

Everyday people learn how to be a better English writer and it is successful because mostly everyone in the United States speaks English. In my experience, I’m learning how to become a better English writer everyday by reading books and writing essays. I’ve taken English 60A, English 60B, and now I’m taking English 50. Writing essays and reading article’s in English 50 helps me to become a stronger writer. In my portfolio I am going to edit my best essay that I did in class and I am also going to revise my biggest challenged essay. Although I use speak and write in English everyday in the world, I am still learning how to become a better writer. Essay On My Writing Style

When writing an essay I usually do very bad, on my grammar mostly. Im not good with where my commas, semicolons, some quotation marks go. I need to work on my citations, thesis statements, and how to tie everything in to make a good conclusion. Other problems for me to work on are my transitional words, and how to stop using words repeatedly, word choice. Usage of the wrong verbs, pronouns, nouns and more. In high school we had to write papers that wasn’t really hard and they actually babied us . Therefore most students from high school going in to college like me are not ready for college level…

Writing is always difficult and takes a long time, this is my first impression about any writing class. Not only because of its techniques, but also the language was a big obstacle. I don’t see myself as a good writer and writing for me is just a required task I have to get it done. I moved to the United States three years ago. I have taken English as a first foreign language in my Egyptian school beside Arabic --my native language--. When I moved here and started school, I placed in an ESL class for a quarter and then moved to regular English classes after that. When I start the writing courses here at UCI, I wasn’t happy about my placement. After, I was taking a regular English classes in high school, I placed in AC English 20C/D. I wished that I had gotten placed in a more advanced writing course. But after finishing these academic courses, I can admit that my enrollment was not a waste and it was the right choice. During these courses, I have improved in many different areas. Doing the essay in three drafts required me to go over and reconsider my essay…

    Goals for English

Even though my writing has progressed since the beginning of the school year, there are still a few parts that I need to improve in my writing to become a better writer. My vocabulary isn't that strong and for the second semester, I would like to start to build my vocabulary and use better words in my writing. I think I can accomplish this goal by memorizing a useful, common word everyday and using it somehow in my daily life. I can also use better words by using the thesaurus while I'm writing. I don't mean to use the thesaurus and translate every word I'm using but change a few words. By taking words from the thesaurus, I am not only learning new vocabulary words, but also learning how to use them. Another problem that I'm having in my writing that I would like to improve next marking period is using less words. I tend to use too many words and make my writing too wordy. It's not that I repeat sentences, I just tend to add too many details that aren't even needed. I plan on fixing this problem by always going through my writing and seeing which words I could take out that would not make the sentence any different. I believe…
