A couple of months of his conversion he received a letter from the military stating he was drafted to fight in the Vietnam War. Muhammad Ali believed that being involved in the war was against his faith and denied the request from the Military. The Government accused him of draft evasion and wanted Muhammad Ali to serve five years in prison and pay a hefty fine of ten thousand dollars. During the Appeal process Ali gathered ton’s of African American athletes and had a press conference, the meeting was called to support Muhammad Ali decision to not join the military because of his religion.
