The introduction to multicultural literature into the broad world of differing walks of life, the reader may be surprised by the similarities between the cultures as well as the differences. Cultures are as eclectic as we are as individuals, each with their own quirks, intricacies, and uniqueness that inspires individuality regarding how the vast differences between cultures correlate to our own. Upon deeper examination of multicultural literature, however; we are also given the privilege to walk the path of the individual from whose perspective we are privy to through the written word. As many have wished at one point or another to know and understand what a particular individual is thinking, through reading multicultural literature, the opportunity to have such an experience and glean copious amounts of information. From the subtlest detail to major political agendas to personality quirks derived from current or past social standards of that culture. Although differences in points of view can prohibit understanding upon first contact greater exposure to literature from various cultures, one can find relation within themselves. One can empathize and humanize the characters that ultimately open the door to greater understanding of how a culture operates as well as attain the ability to relate those experiences to one’s own.…
All in all, it is not a good choice for American society at the present stage to ban gun. From the constitutional view, Gun Ban is contrary to the constitution of human rights and protection spirit; from the political view, it will increase the risk of tyranny; from the economic view, it will lead criminal squares to become one of the guns of the monopolist; from the social reality view, it leads to the lack of citizen means of self-defense; finally, from social culture view, it does not conform to the American culture tradition and social psychology. I think the key to the problem of gun crime is not the gun itself, but the deep problems of the society, such as poverty, social life and so on. I think gun control is just a…
Multiculturalism in education is an essential element in shaping America’s increasingly diverse society by reducing racism. This research takes a look at the relationship between multiculturalism and how educating the youth would cure racism. Multiculturalism is the view that cultural differences should be respected or even encouraged. The concept of multiculturalism reduces racism in our society because it forces people to communicate and understand individuals’ cultures that are different from theirs. Multiculturalism is very important in our Society. It helps us look at other cultures respectably and freely. Without it, we would be forced to be informed about only the main cultures in our society. Multiculturalism can be defined as the policy of maintaining a diversity of ethnic cultures within a community. Getting to know cultures only enhances our knowledge and understanding, which leads to accepting and learning new history. Our education of these various cultures and languages has provided us with open minds, and awareness of the world among us. When we have a better understanding for a culture different from ours it will help us be more understanding which would reduce racism…

The United States of America has about 195 countries and 6,500 spoken languages to interpret, understand, and communicate. Being aware of foreign cultures and affairs is imperative to upholding the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) mission to, “…to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards.” My participation in Second Language Learning and Technology research could aid in improving the way DHS collects domestic and foreign intelligence and decrease the duration of time it takes employees to learn new languages.…
Canada’s multiculturalism, democratic system of government and healthcare system are my top three choices that make me proud to be Canadian. From all the countries in the west, Canada is the only country to rank in the top 20 most diverse and multicultural countries (Morin). Not to mention, Toronto which is a city located in Canada is the most ethnically diverse and multicultural city in the entire planet (Rouse). I am proud to have multiculturalism in Canada since it promotes diversity and demonstrates how people from all cultures can live together in peace and harmony. Multiculturalism is a marvelous way to meet new people and discover various traditions and cultures. Additionally, it brings new foods to savor, interesting cultural activities…

Throughout my practicum, I have realized the importance of being aware of the clients and their backgrounds. I didn’t realize that there was a client in one of the group sessions that was homosexual. When my comment in the group was taken to mean a husband and wife relationship, I didn’t know his background or situation. The other therapist commented and asked how he felt about the topic and if he was uncomfortable. He mentioned that he was ok with it, he felt he could apply what they were saying to any other kind of relationship. He also said that he had come to terms to the fact that he would probably never get married. This just made me realize that I was no longer just with heterosexual LDS men and later I would…
Mormonism is a uniquely American religion, have been founded by Joseph Smith Jr., of New York ("The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints", 2013). Mormonism originated in the 1820s, as described by the Church’s website, when Joseph Smith Jr. was confused and frustrated by the various Christian religions and was unable to choose one to follow. He turned to the Bible, which told him to ask God when he lacked wisdom. So he prayed to God, and was visited by the Heavenly Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. According to one of the members of the governing body of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Bruce McConkie (1958), “Mormonism is indistinguishable from Christianity”. However, there are some distinct differences between Mormonism and other Christian religions, and other religions in general. These differences have led to a history of discrimination and persecution, so much though that the Church today keeps many of its ceremonies, practices, and beliefs private. The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints has had a vast impact on American culture which includes a recent Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney.…
The difference between values and morals are not always clear. Certain values are universal, but this does not mean that they are absolute. For example, killing may be permitted in certain circumstances to execute a criminal, in war, or to preserve one’s life. But in each case, it is recognized as an exception to be justified in terms of value taking precedence. The ethical dilemma raises the question whether or not the therapist can keep their values out of their counseling session. This chapter suggests there are reasons why it might be inappropriate for a counselor to impose a system of values or philosophy on the client.…
Multiculturalism is the cultural diversity of communities and the policies that promote this diversity. Multiculturalism encourages ideologies and policies that promote this diversity and the desire amongst people to express their own identity in the manner they see fit. Mass amounts of immigration was a feature of the United States economy and society since the first half of the 19th century, and from this is where the metaphor of America being a “melting pot” of different diversity’s and cultures comes from. While looking back on America’s history of all the different cultures, races, and ethnicity’s it is truly unique with each having their own amazing story and journey of how each came over to the Unites States. These stories would be a lot easier to talk about it were one that we could look back upon and talk about how with each group of new immigrants that came to U.S. soil they were welcomed with open arms. It would be nice to say how America truly was this melting pot of immigrants who became Americans and treated each other as their own. That each of those groups came over with the hope and determination of achieving the American dream of freedom, a job, and equal treatment for them and their families. However, if we look closely through history while there are great parts written in history books of the early settlers and the discovery of the Unites States and the building of a great nation under hard work and Christian values. There is also a part of history that is not so proudly told, and that history contains discrimination, racism, repression, and a continued pattern of these things which also resulted in establishing white privilege that is still around today. In the early 1800’s blacks were enslaved to wealthier white people who owned them and used them as slaves. Most people today would ignorantly say that that was hundreds of years ago and that our nation is past that and…
