Multilateralism and regionalism are both, complex, a lot discussed and controversial topics. The aim of this paper is, to compare and contrast the multilateral and the regionalist approach and to reveal possible conflicts between them. To achieve this, it is necessary to define a framework in which this paper will operate.
First of all, this paper takes only the economic perspective of both approaches into account. Secondly, there will be no deeper discussion about the theories of both, but more about the current reality of the situation of trade liberalization. To achieve this, there should be several categories or sections defined, to make a comparison more understandable. In each section the position of each approach of trade liberalization will be introduced, compared and possible conflicts will be identified.
The first section deals shortly with the definitions and the theory. This section serves for the better understanding of the two approaches, but the reality looks different. For this reason the main focus will be set on the following sections; the aims of multilateralism and regionalism, the effects on negotiations, the effects on global welfare and some other effects.
