The above picture illustrates amniocentesis, a procedure to test for birth abnormalities including spina bifida*, anencephaly*, and Rh disease*. With the assistance of an ultrasound (imaging of abdomen using high frequency sound waves), a fine needle is guided through the mother’s abdomen/uterine wall to then extract the amniotic fluid from the uterus (womb). Afterwards, the extracted material is sent to the laboratory for cytological analysis which will determine if the fetus is healthy or if further testing and/or possible treatment is necessary. It is important to note that although the amniotic sac (membrane which encloses and protects child) must be punctured in order to obtain fluid, the sac soon heals and the withdrawn fluid is replenished.…

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the assisted reproduction technology techniques. It allows couples to overcome fertility problems. Male and female infertility are among the major barriers for couples that want children. Depending on the definition of infertility, the number of infertile couples worldwide may vary from 48.5 million to 72.4 million (Mascarenhas et al. 9). Among other assisted reproduction technology techniques aimed at reaching pregnancy, IVF shows the highest effectiveness rate. According to Van Voorhis, in 2003 there were more than 100,000 IVF cycles in the USA, almost half of which were successful (379). Although the IVF procedure has some disadvantages, it is a major step in overcoming some fertility problems.…

For centuries Siamese twins have been mesmerizing, and deeply intriguing. They have been mythological creatures, marveled as carnival freaks, and even portrayed as monsters. Conjoined twins, a euphemism for Siamese, are still one of the mysterious and unexplainable developments of twins. Though the formation of twins is clearly outlined, the cause of conjoined twins is not as clear. There are different theories for the cause of conjoined twins but no study identifies the circumstance surrounding their development. Despite the rare occurrence of conjoined twins their presence is becoming more and more accepted into our daily lives, as doctors and families grow to understand their physical and emotions bonds behind their development.…

A multiple birth is when the mother delivers two or more offspring. Since 1980 the multiple offspring birthrate has increased by over 75%. in general multiple births have more complications then a normal one offspring birth. Many new things come into play when the mother is carrying multiple children. Not only is it harder on the mothers body, but the babies are also sharing a space and nutrients. There are multiple short- term complications of multiple births like: pre-eclampsia, and diabetes. Both things are more common within a multiple birth pregnancy, however, they both can be controlled and normally will not alter the offspring in the long run. Long-term complications unfortunately are more serious or even detrimental. Some long-term…

According to the March of Dimes website, more than half the twins are born prematurely, before 37 weeks gestation, at a low birth weight which can lead to long term health problems for the babies. (Being pregnant with twins, triplets and other multiples, retrieved July, 2016) Mothers of multiples are at a greater risk of developing gestational diabetes as well as having to have a c-section. My own pregnancy was complicated by the fact I didn’t know I was going to have twins. A placental abruption was the reason for my premature delivery. Mayo Clinic defines a placental abruption (abruptio placentae) is an uncommon yet serious complication of pregnancy. The placenta is a structure that develops in the uterus during pregnancy to nourish the growing baby. If the placenta peels away from the inner wall of the uterus before delivery — either partially or completely — it's known as placental abruption. Placental abruption can deprive the baby of oxygen and nutrients and cause heavy bleeding in the mother. Placental abruption often happens suddenly. Left untreated, placental abruption puts both mother and baby in jeopardy. (Placental abuption, retrieved July, 2016) Once a placental abruption occurs, cesarean delivery is imminent and must happen within minutes for the babies and sometimes the mothers to…
