What is multiple personality disorder? After 1994 what was known as multiple personality disorder was better known as dissociative identity disorder giving people dealing or not dealing with the disorder a better understanding of it. Multiple personality disorder or dissociative identity disorder is when one’s personality is split into two or more different personalities usually easily recognizable and unrelated to one another. Along with this disorder, the personalities the individual builds usually have their own backgrounds such as giving them their own names, ages, and genders. Although one can be prescribed medication for other contributing factors such as anti-anxiety drugs or anti-depressants there is no medication to treat the actual disorder itself. Multiple personality disorder is treated using psychotherapy to treat the individuals memories of the traumatic event and to deconstruct the alternate personalities and eventually rebuild the individuals new personality fusing the alternate personalities (National Association for Mental Illness, N.D.) Other treatments to help treat this disorder include cognitive behavioral therapy used to help patients find new ways to cope with depression. Dialectical behavioral therapy is used to help the patient come out of and change behavior of self-harm or suicidal thoughts. Like psychotherapy hypnosis is another treatment way a patient may go although some disagree with this method hypnosis can help the patient remember the traumatic events and help find new ways to cope with it as well as deconstruct the alternate identities and eventually make them one (AAMFT, …show more content…
Signs of Carole’s disorder where that when she first went to receive treatment she told her therapist she was happily married, loved her daughter and career to breaking down, and admitting to a struggling relationship with her husband as well as with her daughter. In this case Carole went experienced sexual abuse and because of that it caused her to become disgusted in herself when men showed attention towards her and even more disgusted because she would have thoughts of her touching her daughter or caused her to have episodes of her daughter being sexually abused.
