In the article “Hooked on Gadgets and Paying a Mental Price” by Matt Richtel, we learn about the effects of being consumed by technology as well as multitasking. In the article, Richtel provides us with a real life example of the Campbell’s, and how Mr. Campbell’s addiction almost cost him a lucrative contract for his startup company. Also, we learn about how he could not even enjoy a family vacation without having his technological fix. Richtel also gives us hard scientific facts about the effects of technology and multitasking, such as the fact that multitaskers are less likely to be able to sort out irrelevant information and that multitaskers do worse when trying to juggle between tasks.…
The working memory model (WMM) suggests that there are three main components to human memory. The central executive is the key component of working memory and is what directs attention to particular tasks, deciding which ‘resources’ (being the phonological loop and visual-spatial sketchpad) are allocated to which tasks. The central executive has a very limited capacity however, and can’t attend to too many things at once. The phonological loop (PL) too has a limited capacity and is what deals with auditory information; it is split into two further parts, the phonological store which holds the words you hear, and the articulatory process which is for the words you hear/see and are rehearsed…

Look back at our day so far, how many people have we seen ignoring the world around them, not paying attention to the cashier or not absorbing the information in class? In Alina Tugend essay, multitasking can make you lose…Um... focus, she reported that multitasking may seem like it saves people time however, it makes people less efficient. It may be true that technology provides us with time-saving devices like push to cars, cell-phones that consist of 4G internet access, and washing machines with built in dyers; however most of us still complain about not having enough time. Like everything else in the world, technology has its pros and cons; it affects peoples’ concentration, writing skills, and what we consider…
In the first essay, How (and Why) to Stop Multitasking, the author presents a case against multitasking. The author starts by telling the reader about a past experience with multitasking. He goes on to describe how he had to send three emails in order to convey his message to a client because he was distracted on the phone at the same…
Although seemingly steep, being distracted in the workplace can cause a societal crisis. At the very least if police officers, power plant engineers, doctors, and even the humble teachers were distracted to the place where they zone out their surroundings, society would turn into a place of chaos. This would result in crime running rampant in the streets, power outages, patients in critical condition becoming terminally ill or even die of fatal injuries. Most importantly if teachers would be this intoxicated with technology, their pupils would not receive the vital knowledge not only surpass their classes and but also be successful citizens. Employees are not employed to be distracted on social media or other digital forms. This behavior is unacceptable because this behavior is telling the employer that they are not worth getting their workers full cooperation and commitment to work. Not only is their no social media sources paying their users to utilize their interface, but the employers also have the right to replace perverse employees with more efficient ones. The majority of this situation is avoidable if the ineffective employee realize that they are unable to effectively to multitask their career with their technology addiction. In Restak’s “Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era,” he expresses that with “each switch in attention, your frontal lobes —… the control centers … of [the] ……
James Gleick’s essay grabbed my attention from it is title “Attention! Multitaskers”, because I had a background information about this topic also because I had an experience with it. For instance, I eat, use my phone, watch the TV and talk with my family, all at once. From his words, I realized that all the world are multitasking, and I think the reason behind this is the technology development. After reading this essay, I concluded that multitasking is a good thing from my experience in doing many things at one time. Because time is important and when need to save it as much as we can, so why not to be multitasker if we can do it with concentration and had good results? As it was mentioned in the essay, “I figure that I save at least two or three minutes a day this way” (304). I also think that multitasking creates productivity and not inefficiency. However, this point raised a question in my mind at the end, is multitasking is affecting our lifestyle?…
Fast Entertainment and Multitasking in an Always-On World was written by S. Craig Watkins. This essay appeared in the author’s book, The Young and the Digital, written in 2009. S. Craig Watkins is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and a writer on the side. Watkins addresses the issue of multitasking and its relation to fast entertainment. The context surrounding this issue is that people in our society are trying to multitask to save time and become more productive. Watkins notes that this is due to the accessibility of entertainment being easier than ever before. This problem affects children, as young as two, to college aged students. Watkins’ essay targets this age group because they are most influenced by this issue. Watkins…
Multitasking Hurts Performances but Makes You Feel Better, the title says it all. The authors’ main reason for this article is to share the truth about multitasking with the public. The article talks about studies taken on individual students over a period of time and their urge for multitasking. The students who multitasked seem to think that when they are studying and listening to music, watching television, texting, or on the internet that it makes them more productive. In reality the students are only obtaining an emotional boost from doing so. The author argues that when juggling too many tasks that you will perform poorly so you should refrain from doing so. They also claim that if you are a victim of multitasking now, you will most likely continue this trend and make it a habit. “It is critical that we carefully examine the long-term influence of media multitasking on how we perform on cognitive tasks.”…
In today’s age, technology has become a central aspect of many people’s lives. This new tech has brought with it many benefits that people did not have years ago and has helped bring the world together. With the benefit of cellphones, for example, someone can use them to stay in touch with friends and family while they are away and don’t have access to a phone. This connectivity has become an essential part in today’s society since people can now work anywhere that they want. However, this technology also has downfalls that negatively affect the same person’s life. The distractions that technology brings can be seen clearly with someone’s work performance since they will likely do poorly on a project. The way that technology affects someone’s life varies within the different part of their life. With the multitude of benefits that…
"If you are a determined multitasker, it's an addiction—and you can't stop it," said the fifty-nine-year-old Stevens. (Stefan Kiesbye) Many people see multitasking the same way as Mr. Stevens, but they are incorrect in many ways. The driver can simply put their phone in their purse, away from hands reach, pull over at the side of the road or just wait until they have reached at their destination. Even a two letter text can send anyone to the morgue. The people and the environment around you are basically in your hands; one can either harm it or nourish…
