The tombs were one of the most important aspects of the process of mummification because of their spiritual importance. The three parts of the spirit are the Akh, the Ba, and the Ka. The Ba was the energy that left the body when it was sleeping and this energy has to recognize the body to return. If the Ba doesn't return then the person doesn’t wake up. This was the reason why the mummy must look so much like the living person the body once looked like. If the body’s mummy doesn’t look like the body, then the spirit drifts off and the person can never reach the afterlife. The Ka was the life source or the soul inside the person that lives inside the person’s tomb once the person die. This was the energy that connects the person’s body on Earth and the person’s body or energy in the underworld. If the person’s Ka doesn't get offerings from the person’s family such as food and other things then the person’s soul isn’t connected with Earth and is sent to the “Plains of Suffering” to roam there for all eternity. This journey was so important because this was journey the Egyptians have been preparing for for their whole life by studying the Book of The Dead. Each lesson in the Book of The Dead, corresponds with a solution to the challenge the soul has to endure. If the person does not prepare for the challenges then the person’s soul is stuck in the Plains of Suffering forever. This was why Egyptians have to prepare so extensively during their living life, if they don’t then they suffer for all eternity.
