Murder Of Lady Macbeth
The three witches foretold of Macbeth’s future change of titles, however, instead of this happening naturally, Macbeth took matter into his own hands. These witches addressed Macbeth as the thane of Glamis, thane of Cawdor, and king. Macbeth is taken back by these statements because as of that moment he was only the thane of Glamis. The King thinks very highly of his dear cousin. “O worthiest cousin! The sin of my ingratitude even now was heavy on me. . . ”(Shakespeare Act Scene 4). Shortly after returning home, King Duncan presented Macbeth with the title thane of Cawdor for his honor in battle. Once Lady Macbeth hears of the witches prophecy, greed is sparked within her. This brings light to the fact that Lady Macbeth is not an innocent

Lady Macbeth is more responsible for King Duncan’s murder because she had higher ambitions than Macbeth. She forced evilness upon herself and her high ambitions pushed her to the point of no regret for murdering the king. Lady Macbeth says, “Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe topful Of direst cruelty”(1.5.30-32). This is a clear example of how her ambitions have driven her to the point of evil acts to commit this crime. The act of calling for the evil spirits in order to follow through with a murder is a good reason why King Duncan was murdered. Lady Macbeth also had not only forced herself to murder the king but to force her husband to follow through with the plan of the murder…

Should Macbeth murder the king? This seems to be the dilemma in the story. The three witches were the ones that allured Macbeth into the thought that he could one day be king. If Macbeth was to pull through with his wife’s plan, and murder the king, it could go one of two ways. One way, if Macbeth goes through with this, is that he would become king. Macbeth would be elated at the fact that he is king, but the plan could also end badly. Macbeth could attempt to kill the king, and if the king somehow survived, then he would be severely punished. Macbeth could also kill the king, but than have to live in regret, no longer being ingenuous. “I am settled, and bend up each corporal agent to this terrible feat” (Macbeth Act 1 Sc 7 li. 79-80). Macbeth…

The witches tell Macbeth that he would soon be rewarded with the title Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and the future king of Scotland. Macbeth. Although he questions the validity of the prophecies, Macbeth is curious to know more. Before he was able to question the witches any further they had vanished into thin air, to which restless Macbeth exaggerated out loud, “Stay you imperfect speakers. Tell me more. /By Finel’s death, I know I am Thane of Glamis, /But how of Cawdor? The Thane of Cawdor live /A prosperous gentleman, and to be king / Stands not within my belief, / No more than to be Cawdor. Say from whence /You owe me this strange intelligence” (Shakespeare, 1.3.68-74). Macbeth’s curiosity feeds his desire to attain more knowledge about the prophecies and the use of irony aids in displaying his eagerness to know more about his future. Macbeth does not understand how he can be named Thane of Cawdor while the current Thane still lives. This is ironic because little does he know that the Thane had been removed of his title under the charge of treason and that Macbeth had been appointed the new Thane. The…

Macbeth and Banquo met them on their travels. Thane of Glamis is satisfied with his position, until the three witches tell him, "hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor, thou shalt be King hereafter." (I, iii.). When they reach their destination, King Duncan actually gave Macbeth the position of Thane of Cawdor, and start contemplating of how the rest of the prophecy will come true. In Polanski and Kirosawa's versions of Macbeth in the films, Banquo and Macbeth actually laughed at the prophecy, emphasizing on how they thought it was silly. I do not believe that the witches are the reason for what happened to Macbeth; they had a prophecy and simply told it to him. Some say that the three witches were the reason for the start of everything, and there was no true prophecy, but a counter-argument would be that they knew Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor. Later on, Macbeth tells his wife what had happened by writing her letter. Macbeth learns that the only way he can become King is to kill Duncan, and get rid of the heir, and also prevent Banquo’s son from gaining access to the throne. Lady Macbeth begins to consider what "impedes thee from the golden round" (I, v). She desperately wants her Macbeth to be King and she calls upon the "aids of sprits"(I, v) to help her in getting Macbeth to kill Duncan. There is a huge juxtaposition between Macbeth's reaction and Lady Macbeth's reaction. She seems more bloodthirsty and is very keen for…

Within the drama Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, multiple characters meet their untimely demise for similar reasons, but both have vastly different repercussions- not only upon the other characters, but also upon the plot of the play. Lady Macbeth showcases these differences in her reactions to two of the deaths within Macbeth. After Macbeth has killed Duncan- the king of the realm, she almost seems to not be affected by it. While Macbeth is panicking, she retains a level head- as if she couldn’t care less about the fact that her husband has murdered someone in her own house. “These deeds must not be thought of after these ways; so, it will make us mad” (Shakespeare 34). However, when Banquo is killed, Lady Macbeth is haunted by it. “I tell…

    Macbeth-Equivocation

The play opens with the three witches discussing their upcoming meeting with Macbeth. Before they depart, they intone together the equivocal words: “Fair is foul, and foul is fair” (1.1.10). This phrase sets the stage for the evil that takes place in the play. Evil is never attractive if it looks like evil; it tempts only if it looks like good. Thus, we know that the witches will approach Macbeth with something that looks “fair,” but is actually “foul.” Indeed, when we first meet Macbeth, he remarks to Banquo, “So foul and fair a day I have not seen” (1.3.38), accentuating the feeling that Macbeth will soon become the victim of the witches’ equivocal tricks. The witches meet the two men on the heath, and hail Macbeth as Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King hereafter. Macbeth is already Glamis, and he learns soon after that Duncan has named him the new Thane of Cawdor (1.3.105). Although Banquo warns him that “instruments of darkness tell us truths,/ Win us with honest trifles, to betray’s/ In deepest consequence” (1.3.124-126), Macbeth takes the witches’ bait, and immediately begins entertaining murderous thoughts as he imagines himself to be the next King of Scotland. Underneath the apparent “fairness” of the prophecy lies the “foul” temptation to commit evil.…
