Muscles Of Nasopharynx
First step of swallowing is when the muscles of the tongue and the soft palate contract. When the muscles contract during this time it is voluntary. It is when the food is chewed and compressed. It compresses against the palate. The food then is pushed through the mouth and enters the oropharynx. Once it enters the oropharynx, the muscles contractions are involuntary and also become rapid. When swallowing the nasopharynx needs to be sealed off, so when you swallow your soft palate raises and compresses against the wall of the pharynx, which then seals off the nasopharynx. The pharynx’s longitudinal muscles, and the suprahyoid muscles, make it possible to get the food. Those muscles contract to widen, and shorten the pharynx, which makes the food pass through. The last part of swallowing also is involuntary movement of the muscles.

During the pharyngeal stage of swallowing, it was observed that the patient exhibits reduced hyoid elevation, reduced airway protection, and reduced passive movement of the epiglottis. The patient had a total of three swallows. It was observed during the first swallow that there was a delayed timing of laryngeal elevation. The delayed timing of laryngeal elevation also caused a delay in epiglottic movement. In a typical swallow, the epiglottis folds down to protect the airway. However, the epiglottis did not fold down completely when the patient completed the second swallow. It was also observed that…

Air enters through nostrils which contain coarse hairs. The pharynx is shared between the digestive and respiratory system and extends between the nostrils and the larynx. The larynx joins the pharynx to the trachea; it consists of cartilages and is also known as the voice box. The trachea divides to form the primary bronchi, the left and right bronchi which the bronchi are two tubes that carry air into the lungs and they .break down into smaller branches which are called bronchioles. At the end of these are air sacs called alveoli which absorb oxygen from the air. The diaphragm is a muscle which is directly below the lungs, during inhalation the diaphragm contracts to allow the chest cavity to expand as the lungs fill with air.…

A burger is broken down mechanically by biting into it. The food in the mouth sets off salivary glands that secrete salivary amylase, which breaks down amylase in the burger. When the food is broken down enough, the tongue shapes the food in a bolus, or a ball. The bolus is pushed back to the pharynx at the back of the throat. The food stimulates the opening of the flap so the good goes down the esophagus, rather than the windpipe. Because of peristalsis, rhythmic waves created by muscles in the throat, the food slides easily down the digestive tract. Salivary amylase continues to break down the starch all the way down the esophagus.…
