Music 100 Homework Assignment 2
Homework Assignment: Find someone over the age of sixty (60) and interview them on all things Bahamian and what they think of the younger generation.
The person I chose to interview was my grandmother, Mrs. Marina Smith, who is seventy four (74) years of age. First, I asked my grandmother if she knew anything about the Bahamas, and if so can she please tell me. She was able to tell me the Bahamas is called “The Isle of Petual June”, The Late Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling was the first Prime Minister of the Bahamas but prior to that they were called premiers, Mrs. Rubyann Darling was the first Bahamian woman registered to vote, around the black in the Bahamian flag is supposed to be sewn with white thread which represents fifteen (15) percent of the white Bahamian population, and that the first Junkanoo costume was made out of fringed newspaper and other made from sponge. I had to stop her here for she was then going into the first general elections and things of that sort. Next, I asked Mrs. Smith if she knew any Bahamian artist or songs. She stated the late Carl Brice (her cousin), Richie Delamore, Blind Blake, Eloise Lewis, Maurine Duvalier, Abigail Sharlow, Freddy Munnings, King Eric and his Knights, Sweet Emily, Pat Rolle (who sounded like Nat King Cole), Peanuts Taylor and Tony McKay. For the songs she listed “Oh Island in the Sun”, “Island Woman”, “Married Man”, “Pretty Brown Eyes”, “Mary-Ann”, “Island in the Sun”, “Mr. Yellow Bird”, “Gern Down Burma Road”, “Going Back to the Island” ,”Send Him Home”, I then asked her if she could sing the ones she knew of. She sang, “Send Him Home”, “Pretty Brown Eyes”, “Married Man” and “Oh, Island in the Sun”. I then asked Mrs. Smith what’s her favorite Bahamian song. To that she stated “Send Him Home” because she likes the words and the melody of the song. I then proceeded to ask Mrs. Smith where she heard most of these songs. She said when she was growing up she heard almost all of these songs on the radio, since this was

In Europe, horns gained popularity in the trendy sport of hunting. As this aristocratic sport spread, horn-makers experimented with different shapes and sizes to increase the range of notes possible. In 1636, French musical scholar Marin Mersenne wrote of four different kinds of horns in his Harmonie Universelle: Le grand cor (the big horn), the cor à plusiers tours, (the horn of several turns), le cor qui n'a qu'un seul tour (the horn which has only one turn), and le huchet (the horn with which one calls from afar). Horns such as the cor de chasse and trompe de chasse (pictured left) fall into this latter category. Shortly thereafter, the horn began to appear in the concert halls and theaters. Too raucous for inclusion with the fine oboes and violins in the orchestra pit though, at first the hunting horns were used only onstage in scenes depicting, naturally, the hunt.…

On Sunday April 7 , 2013 I attended the Junior Recital for Michelle Ellison (soprano) and Rachel Stanton (piano) at Oberlin College & Conservatory. Coming to my second show at Oberlin College I really didn’t know what to expect this time around. On this nice day at Oberlin College I observed many students outside playing their instruments and various groups outside singing in circles enjoying the weather. I could tell that these students were very passionate about music. Inside of the conservatory building the recital was held inside of the Kulas Recital Hall. This was my first time entering a room that was made specifically for musical recitals. The hall wasn’t too big but it was large enough to fit a nice sized crowd in a narrow room.…

The author of “Rebellion Through Music” is Heather Wendtland, who majored in sociology and minored in psychology. She addresses the idea of Caucasian females, mainly teenagers, using rap and hip-hop music to express their feelings. The essay was written to analyze and interpret a cultural phenomenon for a second-semester composition class at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I agree with Wendtland that youths of the 20th century use music to show their rejection of authority. However, there are other possibilities as to why youths listen to rebellious songs.…
