Musical Yin Yang

Ever since I can remember I’ve always had a passion for music and not a day goes by that I don’t listen to it. Music not only carries me throughout my daily routine, I believe it runs through my veins in which it has affected my life in positive and negative ways. Although, there are some similarities in the ways that I am affected negatively and positively, there are some distinct differences that make music a positive and negative part of my life. Music can have many positive effects on a person’s health. For example, music has been proven to calm and stable the human mind. It has had the most effect on my blood pressure, heart, and respiratory rates in which it has positively improved my health. Moreover, it can improve your health by relieving stress and influencing our emotions to make a miserable mood better. Negatively, it can lead to a bad influence on children and teens and give them negative interpretations from the music they listen to. Music has been my key to enjoy the little things in life, however; it can negatively influence our minds to do wrong. In addition, the positive effects of music in my life somewhat reflect the positive effects I’ve found from factual information. Every day for me is usually pretty hectic and I’m always occupied by something. It’s easy for me to find myself stressed out due to all of my responsibilities. When I begin to feel overwhelmed and stressed I often relax in my room and listen to music. Listening to music positively affects my health in which it lowers my stress levels and has certain improvements on my health in regards to my blood pressure. Music also benefits my emotions. For instance, when I used to get excited for a basketball game certain songs that I would often listen to would boost that excitement and that feeling grew stronger. Nevertheless, Music is a good way to help me stay focused. Furthermore, there are

In the text “Is music a good tool for health?” by Elizabeth Scott, the author explains how research has demonstrated the positive effects of music on bodies and minds. Nowadays there are many new programs in health care facilities that use music therapy, which uses music in form of therapy to heal people. The use of this method has been successful that even hospitals have started to use music therapy on some of their patients, who develop problems with depression, muscle tension, stress and to motivate them. Researchers have found that music beats send stimulating waves to the brain and by increasing and decreasing the beats they can control people’s emotions. A strong beat will keep you alert and a slow one will calm you down. Because music can control your heart rate, your body automatically experiences relief, and that’s why music and music therapy prevent and relieve stress and anxiety disorders.…

Let's start out with the positive affects of music on our young adolescents. In some opinions, when children are in school, some of them focus better when listening to music then without. Another thing that is good about most songs today is that music may uplift kids when they are in a downed mood. With other music like classical or even just relaxing music, it can make the most “hyper” children relax or even fall asleep. Other music can inspire our youth. For example, when working out, having a “metal” type of song on can motivate people to work-out a little harder. Effects of Music

Music is a very powerful medium and in some societies there have been attempts to control its use. It is powerful at the level of the social group because it facilitates communication which goes beyond words, enables meanings to be shared, and promotes the development and maintenance of individual, group, cultural and national identities. It is powerful at the individual level because it can induce multiple responses – physiological, movement, mood, emotional, cognitive and behavioral. Few other stimuli have effects on such a wide range of human functions. The brain’s multiple processing of music can make it difficult to predict the particular effects of any piece of music on any individual. “Music is an important and extremely useful tool in the way we learn and to deny its power is a waste of a truly wonderful resource” (Kristian David Olson). Though some would look at music as a small footnote in the progression of humanity, it is in fact a much greater force; for some, it defines their very existence. The fact is, music is a driving force in society; it has been present since the dawn of man. The average person spends several hours a day listening to music, whether they see it as a main activity or just as something to take up space in the background. It is not surprising, then, that music has a great effect on how humans think and act, possibly even affecting intelligence. Several studies have been conducted on this theory; though some results are questionable, the consensus view seems to be that music has the capacity for both positive and negative effects. The ability of music to act therapeutically has long been recognized. Therapy can involve listening to or actively making music. Increasingly it may involve both. Music can be effective in conjunction with other interventions in promoting relaxation, alleviating anxiety and pain in medicine and dentistry, and promoting well-being through the production of particular endorphins. Its…

What can music do to us? How can it affect us? Music is proven to alter our moods and outlook in life. Different genres of music have different effects on us. Let’s say for example rock music, it tends to waken us from our sleeping senses and may create a lively outlook or mood for a period of time, but let us still remember that effects of music vary from people to people. Taking rock music into consideration again, while some people get their positive mood and high energy from listening to rock music, other people tend to be irritated by it and consider it as a noise. Some people prefer pop music or jazz music because for them it is pleasing and that’s the reason why their mood becomes positive. If it can affect people positively, of course it can also affect people negatively. Like sad love songs, for people who are broken-hearted or have a tragic love story of their own they would find this type of song as a depressing one. It may cause more sadness to them and therefore changes their mood negatively. Past experiences of people is an important factor on how music can affect us.…

Over 90% of responses have said that 3 things make a good song. Those three factors are lyrics, a melody line and a catchy rhythm (Forum.emusictheory.com, 2014). My survey I created has reached a result to this question that most people said that the best type of music is the one with the most meaning. They said that the lyrics of the song make it good because they like that it has meaning and songs without meaning are worth nothing. Another factor they said that makes a popular song is that it has to be in tune and in sync with the beat. If the beat does not flow with the lyrics than it will just be awkward and hard to follow (Survey Monkey, My Survey, 2014). From the teachers, music students, store workers and other individuals I interviewed they all had different types of music in which they like to listen to. They all agreed with the other people’s opinions but because they know more about music they also had different responses and added other factors which contributed as to what makes music popular. They said that certain types of instruments and objects can make a difference.…
