28 Feburary 2013 West Michigan Concert Winds Concert

On February 24th, I attended the West Michigan Concert Winds “Winner and Winds” concert. West Michigan Concert Winds is a volunteer group that performs instrumental music to the community. This ensemble contains a wide range of musical talents from all different backgrounds. Some members are college students, some teachers. There was also many current or retired band directors apart of the ensemble. They performed all different genres of music from a Sousa march to an Irish wake by A.J. Potter. There was also a scholarship acceptance performance by a local high school junior who was amazing at the clarinet. The first song was titled “Fanfare for Saint Cecilia.” This piece was composed for Saint Cecilia on a special occasion called “Three Countries Day.” This is an example like we talked about in class where a composer had a job of composing music for a certain event because prerecorded music wasn’t available at that time. The song had a magnificent and triumphant feel to it with many brass heavy parts specifically trumpet. Woodwinds played the accompaniment underneath but were not heard exclusively. Some parts I liked about this piece was the overall excitement that it had and the energy that the ensemble put into it. It was very easy to tell that the instrumentalists enjoyed playing the song. Polka and Fugue from the Opera “Schwanda, The Bag Piper” was another piece I found fascinating. It was a Chek Folk tale which told the story about the lonely bag piper and his adventures. It started out with the woodwinds playing the theme of a cheery thrill note and triplet. The feel of the music was cheery and you were almost able to hear the story being told. I also enjoyed hearing the Fugue part of the song because that was also something we discussed in class. The fugue was characterized by imitation and variation on the imitation by different sections throughout the band.

The songs with political tones were pretty interesting to me too since I had never heard any of them before. I was also a little bit surprised when the sacred music did not have instrumental accompaniment, because I am so used to hearing it with church music. The martial music was fun to listen to, especially Yankee Doodle because it is so familiar with the words that were later added to it.…

For the first example, I went with my Scottish half and chose ‘Amazing Grace Bagpipes”. This video is of a company of bagpipers playing Amazing Grace at a funeral. The piece is played slowly (adagio). The dynamic level is initially moderately loud (mezzoforte), with the entire company playing three verses of the song. They end with a solo of just the first line, played softly (piano). The rhythm throughout the piece is slow (adagio). The theme is repeated three times, once per verse. The cadence is obvious, as the bagpipes pause at the end of each line, with a longer pause at the end of each verse. This version’s harmony reflects consonance, the tone is smooth and comforting. The texture is monophonic.…

I liked the piece “No Sacred Space” by Jared Aragon. I thought it was very creative. It started out as just the organ playing then the alto flute joined in. After that the viola joined in. I thought this was done smoothly.…

The same tune would get caught in your ear, then it was moving you faster or slower; as well as that tune getting louder or softer at appropriate intervals coinciding with the dramas taking place. I also noticed a few woodwind and harp solos during the brighter, happier moments of the performance. The use of castanets and tambourines also caught my eyes and ears. Of course, there was tremendous use of varying the pitch and tempo as well as how loud or soft the music was. Again this is all to enhance how the emotion was conveyed to the audience. Additionally, a piece that stuck out in my head as I left (mainly because I’ve never really noticed or caught on to it until after learning this in one of our class sections) was toward the end when a solo played for a period of time and then that instrument was joined by all the other instruments—playing the same thing—in consistent pleasing…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

The second piece I reviewed was entitled The Wound Dresser. This is a composition for chamber orchestra and baritone singer. John Adams based this piece off of The Wound Dresser, a poem by Walt Whitman. The poem was written in in 1865 and was based on Whitman’s experiences working as a nurse in the American Civil War. John Adam’s is most often recognized as a minimalist, and well known for his pieces Doctor Atomic, and Short Ride in a Fast Car. You can hear examples of minimalism all throughout the piece.…

A barbershop quartet came into our classroom to perform for us, and it was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever experienced. I was surprised when they walked through the door because I was not expecting to see anything like that in MU 100. I could tell by their matching horse vests that it was going to be a fun and exciting hour. When they began to sing, I was beyond impressed and intrigued by how well they sounded and how they were able to blend their voices so well.…

My favorite single piece from the Chamber Orchestra concert was, Across the Calm Waters of Heaven: A Prayer Song for San Bernardino by Ahmed Alabaca. This piece had so much meaning to it just throughout the notes it made the mood sad. In the beginning of the piece, the flutes stood out most because of their rich sounding wind-like whistling. This was a soft, low pitch song and started gradually increasing after the pianist had his first solo. The louder the dynamic got, the more intense and powerful the song was. Toward the very end of the song the instruments had decreased in volume and ended with a low melody.…

I attended the concert of McGill Baroque Orchestra and McGill Cappella Antica on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. What special about this concert was the guest conductor and solo violinist Adrian Butterfield. The performed pieces were Welcome to all the pleasures, Leclair’s Violin Concerto in A major, Locatelli’s Introduzione teatrale in G major, C. P. E. Bach’s Sinfonia in C major and My heart is inditing. The venue was Redpath Hall of McGill University.…

The first song called, “Through the Eyes of Love,” was played from the movie called The Ice Castles. This song started off with the xylophone, and then the guitars and the rest of the instruments sounded in. They started off the song with a very bright tone and middle fast tempo. It had a lot of beats to it and it was very intense at the same time. This song was created by a very lively feeling and gave audiences a little bit information about what kind of music they were going to perform for the next three hours. Also, this song was a great opener because it made the audience (it was only about 15 of us, mostly elderly) get involved in the concert such as clapping their hands and tapping with their feet to feel the rhythm and the tempo. This song for some reason reminded me of being in the club late at night, dancing my life away. This song definitely put my groove on because I could not stop tapping my feet and moving to the beat.…

The concert was a short, but fun concert to attend. The instructor of the group was out going and gave the audience a good background on the music being played. The group was dressed in very nice attire, and all matched each other pretty well. They played a various number of instruments, some of which I had personally played, and others I have never even seen. Most of the instruments used were cymbals and drums. They used bongo, snare, bass, and tom tom drums. There were also small drums that sat on the performers lap with a strap to go under the legs to stay in place. The set of music played with those drums was very interesting at rhythmic. When the instructor just changed his beat slightly the other two gentlemen knew to change as well, it was very interesting to pay attention to the change although it was very hard to notice. The cymbals used were very small cymbals are used to just tap against each other to produce a high pitched ting. The Ensemble also utilized the use of mallets on the cymbals are drums, using the mallets on the cymbals made a drastic change in the style or feeling of the music. A Large majority of the pieces played had vocals as well; the vocals were interesting even though I didn’t understand them, but they still went with the tempo and beat of the group. The vocals sang sounded tribal, as if they were from African roots and culture.…

On November 18, 2010 in the Engelman Recital Hall, the Baruch Performing Arts Center presented Alexander String Quartet and the Music of Mozart, Kodály, and Dvořák. The Alexander String Quartet had four male performers; two of the performers played violins, the third performer played the viola, and the fourth performer played the cello. They performed only one song, which was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quartet No. 20 in D major, which was written in 1786 in Vienna and is said to have been dedicated to his friend Franz Anton Hoffmeister, which is why it is nicknamed “Hoffmeister”. There are four movements to this piece: the first movement is in allegretto in D major, the second in menuetto, the third in adagio, and the fourth allegro. The concert was very interesting to watch because all of the performers played very well with each other. They all were intently watching each other when they weren’t playing and when they were playing they still kept their focus on both the other performers and their music pieces. Before their performance they had a little Q and A session with the audience, which was very interesting. The audience asked a number of different questions, such as how it was to live life always traveling and how they all managed to get along with each other having to be forced to always be together. They informed the audience that they all loved playing and performing all over and that when they were traveling together they seemed to manage how to distant themselves from each other a little so they wouldn’t get sick of one another. They also informed the audience that they loved performing for colleges because of the response they got from the college students, which I was very surprised to hear. They all spoke highly of one another and they also told the audience that if one person was to ever mess up during a performance, another player would help them out…

Bassoon Concerto in F Major, Op. 75 written by Carl Maria von Weber was an enjoyable piece to listen to. The strings play first during the beginning and then the woodwinds join in.
