Music Should Not Be Censored
Though censorship is seen differently in the eyes of many people, the general stance on censorship is simple. Music should not be censored. Yes, some music promotes violence, drugs, sex, and alcohol, but it’s the artists way to express how they feel. Censoring music limits the artists right to freedom of speech and in some instances it changes the view the artist had when they pictured the song.
In todays society adults want to protect innocent children from the so called filth, foul language, racist comments, and sexual references the artists might portray, but the idea of censorship is just ridiculous. The First Amendment to the Constitution says that no one not even Congress can forbid the freedom of speech. Some people may understand where parents are coming from when they’re talking about the filth you hear on the radio, but no one has the right to stop someone from expressing themselves.

Yes, there are artists like Tyler the Creator or Tyga whose songs have absolutely no meaning to them, and some teenagers might not agree with those type of songs being made, but there are many motivational and inspirational songs produced by artists who most people think may be the worst influence for a child, but in reality those songs show true emotion and definitely shouldn't be censored. Artists like Eminem, Jake Miller, and Tupac use music to express their feelings and emotions. In some instances, that is their only way to get away from the real world, music is a way for people to reach their emotions and taking that ability away isn’t fair. Songs like Guts over Fear by Eminem, Steven by Jake Miller, or Dear Mama by Tupac all have an inner message or a deeper meaning than what is shown, not many people notice that though. If someone actually took the time to get past all the foul language and maybe racist comments they might realize that the lyrics have an inspirational

I believe censorship is acceptable because it’s very much needed in today’s society. Not all movies or music are meant for a younger age group. There are specific genres and ratings for children because most adults believe they should be “shielded” from the topics discussed or depicted. The NC-17 rating is perfect for those people who enjoy seeing brains ripped out of a person’s head. Also censorship is acceptable because there is larger variety of movies for parents to see while their child watches a PG…

To add up, due of the amendment made by our founding fathers, I do not believe there will ever be an answer to the question whether or not music should be censored. The way I see, it should not be censored. Unfortunately, many children often hear explicit language from older siblings or parents at an early age. They believe that since someone…

Here’s another question: Why are ‘vulgar words’, violent and sexist lyrics censored on channels like MTV while the videos they are showing are acting out their offending lyrics? I think it is worse for children to watch sexual or violent videos than to listen to music containing lyrics of the same nature. For example, 33.9% of MTV and BET videos combined contain violence. Violent ideas in music, especially misogynistic ones, are offensive to many people. In addition, violent rap music videos create stereotypes against black people, whether we believe in them or not. African-American men are portrayed as aggressors in 25% of violent videos and 95% of them are men. Aggressors are portrayed as role models, not villains 80% of the time. 47% of the victims are white women.…

the past two decades. There have been many different arguments on the topic, however the question still remains as if it should be censored or it should not be censored. Before one can form an opinion on this, one must hear both sides of the argument. Some believe that music should be censored so all audiences can hear it without it containing any controversial lyrics. Others believe it should not be censored and musical artists should be able to speak, sing, rap, or rhyme freely without anyone censoring them.…

No, that's not true," says Wendy Wright of an organization, Concerned Women for America, on the enemy list of virtually all other anti-censorship supporters. "Censorship means that the government restrains speech. We are in favor of those in the music industry using common sense: In essence, that they don't promote behavior or activities that they wouldn't want committed against their wife or children." CWFA sees music the music in question as having potential to cultivate certain ideas in the minds of the youth."The argument that it does not affect kids, that it does not promote similar behavior, is ridiculous. If that were true, they would not advertise or rely on marketing – both fields depend on the fact that humans can be enticed into doing something that they wouldn't have thought up on their…

Boris Opening Statement- Censorship in music is a topic that has brought about much controversy in the past two decades. There have been many different arguments on the topic, however the question still remains as if it should be censored or it should not be censored. Before you can form an opinion on this, you must hear both sides of the argument on this much-debated topic. Some people believe that music should be censored so all audiences can hear it without it containing any controversial lyrics. Others believe it should not be censored and musical artists should be able to speak, sing, rap, or rhyme freely without anyone censoring them. Preventing speech is a clear violation of the First Amendment. When you really think about it, it is a violation of the First Amendment, which says: "Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech or of the press". The First Amendment guarantees the right to freedom of speech, and censorship is violating peoples' rights to say whatever they…

According to the First Amendment, artists should be protected by the freedom of speech which by law should protect the artist from any censorship. For example, if a rapper uses vulgar language in one of their songs and raps about fighting or killing their enemy, it doesn’t necessarily mean that whoever is listening will go out and commit a murder. If you’re an adult, you can’t blame a song or an artist for your actions. Whatever an artist says in their music isn’t mean’t to be taken verbatim, in most situations the lyrics are just for entertainment, nothing more. Most people that support the censorship of music are only supporting it for personal reasons. Most people are willing to give up their freedom of speech just because they don’t agree with 21 Savage’s views on religion and how he lived his life or how Lil Wayne chooses to be in a gang or smokes weed.…

When individuals are expressing words that are hurtful and potentially dangerous to use in communities censorship should be in effect. The statements that are made in hip hop promote drug dealing, gender abuse and killing to make a point. Individuals should not be able to say these things and be rewarded with revenue.…

The U.S. Constitution says that everyone that is an American citizen has the right of free speech. You can find censorship almost anywhere around you. It’s in music, television, and even literature. I don’t believe that it is fair that there be some much censorship in a country that does nothing but promise freedom to all its occupants. It is said that suppression of all of these things helps to prevent the crimes that occur. However even with all of the restrictions, there are still people murdering and stealing. America was founded on freedom. Why should the government censor the motion picture industry, the…

Music Lyrics being NON-VIOLENT Rap music can be considered a style of art, and a way for the artists to express feelings through their words on paper. However, there are quite a few rap artists that get criticized for their lyrics. In my essay, I want to discuss why rappers use certain lyrics in their music and why people shouldn’t believe that it causes violence among the younger generations. People shouldn’t censor the music just because of violent, vulgar and abusive messages it promotes to the world. I believe in my own mind, that there is a reason for these types of lyrics that rap artists use and I will simply explain those reasons in this essay. Rap has been called one of the most important music forces to emerge in two decades. It’s pounding beats and staccato rhymes exploded on the streets of the urban America in the early 1980s and since have become the theme music and lyrical heart of the vibrant youth culture called hip-hop ( SIRS 1993). There are many different types of rap artist. There are some that talk about money, some talk about righteousness, and the list goes on and on. Every rap artist had their own way of expressing themselves. There are those that talk about sex, drugs, and violence who receive the negative attention( SIRS 1993). People, think this so- called gangster rap is a bad influence on children in the world and that it promotes violence and that it also is abusive to women. Delores Tucker, head of national congress of black women has been among those pressuring different record companies to stop distributing gangster rap music. There were other significant names that participated in this action. Names like Senate Majority leader Bob dole, and former education Secretary William J. Bennett(Surveys, pg. 1). There are some rap artists that have been openly criticized for their lyrics. Rappers like Lil Kim, Too Short, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and a member from “Too Live Crew,” named Luke Skywalker. These rap artists in the past have been…

Music carries many trends from generation to generation, but one of the oldest forms of censorship is what can and can’t be read on paper. Banned books are usually illegal because of certain information that could be a threat to someone or security. Censorship in today’s society can get out of hand real quick on both ends of the issue. It seems like there is always someone who is personally offended by something and tries to take whatever offended them away from everyone else. Then again, if there was no censorship, perhaps collective morals would cease to exist in society. What is not obscene to one person could very well be to another and that is one main reason why censorship does exist. However, that something is obscene to one person shouldn’t forbid another from seeing or hearing that form of expression if they want. Censorship helps gives the right to parents to raise their children in an environment in which parents feel comfortable and it helps parents decide what materials their children can be exposed to and what should be withheld. “We are living in a time when flowers are trying to live on flowers, instead of growing on good rain and black loam,” said Faber. What Faber is talking about is that censorship can also…
