UNIT THREE: Music Appreciation Text Questions

The answers to the Review & Critical Thinking questions are worth 10 points.

Review Questions
1. What is the Hurrian song? Why is it important? A collection of music inscribed in cuneiform on clay tablets. It’s the oldest surviving piece of notated music in the world.
2. What is the Natya Shastra? Why is it important? Ancient indian treatise on the performing arts: dance and music. . It is very important to the history of Indian classical music because it is the only text which gives such detail about the music and instruments of the period.
3. Who were troubadours? What was their music like? Was a composer and performer of Old Occitan lyric poetry during the High Middle Ages (1100–1350). Some songs were about love, but most were fun or vulgar satires.
4. What are modes? Describe at least one type of mode. alternative tonalities (scales) that can be derived from the familiar major scale by starting on a different scale tone. Key of C, the Ionian scale would be C D E F G A B. The other familiar mode is Aeolian.

5. What is polyphonic music? How does it differ from monophonic music? A texture consisting of two or more similarities line of independent melody, as opposed to a musical texture.
Critical Thinking Questions
1. Why did early humans develop music? What are some of the ways that they were thought to create music? Humans are born with rhythm and probably imitate the songs of the world around them.
2. Why is the study of prehistoric and ancient music important? What can we learn from it? One must understand the past to prepare for the future. We must understand were we come from to know where we’re going.
3. What roles did music play in the life of prehistoric and ancient people? Are the roles similar to or different from the roles that it plays today? He it helped lead humanity to becoming artisans. Yes I think music played as big a role in life as it does today people still enjoy creating and listening to music.
4. What were the effects of musical notation on music, society, and composers? Music notation allows for multiple people to be able to learn to play a musical composition without hearing it as well as to have it survive long after the composer is dead. It also broadens a composers ability to create music without having to always memorize.
5. Describe medieval music's relationship with the Catholic Church. How was the music influenced by the Church? The Catholic Church had a huge influence in this period of time. And that influence reached the arts as in paintings, dance, and music. So the church would have people making music for them and the cultural uprising of their religion.
