Mwana Pwo Mask

The title of the first sculpture is a Mwana pwo mask (young woman). The Chokwe people made these at the end of the nineteenth century - early 20th century. The Chokwe people were from the great southern migration of the Lunda. They live in a huge territory, north east Angola and Kasai Occidental, Bandundu, katanga, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. Dimensions are H. 10 5/8 x W. 7 in. (27 x 17.8 cm). Most of Chokwe masks' mediums are Wood, fiber, brass, pigment. Most of chokwe masks have sharp teeth, rounded eyebrows, slender nose, small ears, and elliptical mice. The shape of the face is an inverted triangle. The major components of the hair ornaments are a braided headband and heavy fringes. The representations of the mask
