Enzymes are proteins that increase the rate of chemical activity. Their three dimensional structure determines their function, and is made of chains of amino acids that have folded into a specific shape with a unique property. Enzymes lower the activation energy needed for a chemical reaction, therefore speeding up the process. Multiple enzymes work together in metabolic pathways, taking a product (end result) of one metabolic reaction as a substrate (substance or molecule at start of process) for another reaction. Metabolic pathways create the avenue for fructolysis, the breakdown (catabolism) of fructose, occurring in the liver, and in muscle and fat tissue. Most of fructose obtained by diet is metabolized in the liver, where the enzyme fructokinase is abundant. This enzyme phosphorylates the substrate (fructose) into fructose-1-phosphate, which is then split into glyceraldehyde and dihydroxyacetone phosphate, both three carbon molecules that can enter the glycolytic pathway for further oxidation and energy production. Enzymes are specific to a substrate, meaning they have an active spot on the enzyme that will only work with a specific shape of a particular substance (substrate).…

As a nursing student, I learned to shave patients in preparation for surgery; as a public health nurse, I taught mothers to clean their infants' umbilical cords with alcohol and showed patients newly diagnosed with diabetes how to wipe the skin with alcohol before injecting insulin. Since then, high-quality research has shown that pre-operative shaving increases rather than decreases post-operative infections (Kjonniksen et al. 2002), that cleaning umbilical cords with sterile water shortens the time to cord separation without increasing infections (Medves and O'Brien 1997) and that insulin can be safely injected through clothing (Fleming et al. 1997). These are only three of innumerable examples of how high-quality studies of nursing care can influence our practice. As a nursing student, I learned to shave patients in preparation for surgery; as a public health nurse, I taught mothers to clean their infants' umbilical cords with alcohol and showed patients newly diagnosed with diabetes how to wipe the skin with alcohol before injecting insulin. During the mid-1990s COSCO started to think global regarding the structure of their IT system. In 1994 they bought Tradeware but the internal development failed. In 1996 the first central electronic data interchange center was set up to coordinate communication within the global company. In the late-1990s COSCO tried to stabilize their IT network with hiring more and more IT experts. The number of IT staff increased from 45 in the late-1990s to 349 employees in 2001. On the one hand COSCO benefited by the increased IT consideration but on the other hand COSCO still relied on the old IT-platform which was not up-to-date.…

    Narrative Essay - Camo Rose

It was April 2010 at Florida State University’s Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. The room was silent except for the honorable sound of the American Anthem announcing it was the beginning of our graduation ceremony. Closing my eyes, I could feel the proud vibes from every single person in the auditorium. Some were sobbing, and others hummed along to the song. I took a deep breath and felt I had finally lead my life into the right direction. I was so proud of it, including going into boot camp in just two weeks. I almost choked when I realized I had not told my mother of such decision I made weeks earlier. Just the thought of it made me forget I was celebrating such an important moment in my life. But, as the fear struck me, everyone started applauding with excitement and all the chit-chat started. Hours later, as the ceremony concluded, we walked outside to celebrate our achievement with our families. My mother had the biggest smile I have ever seen on her face in years. She rushed to where I was and hugged me very tight, as she handed me a beautiful single green rose, as she always compared to me, because I was to her a beautiful, brave only child. She told me how this moment reminded her what she felt at her graduation back in 1991, when she became a microbiologist technician. It was her proudest moment; even though my mother and father both graduated with Associates Degree in medicine I was the first one in the family to achieve a Master Degree in medicine. I guess the passion for medicine runs in our blood. She invited me to go celebrate the special occasion at our favorite restaurant. Later that evening, as we were enjoying a delicious Japanese dinner, I realized it was maybe not the right time, but the moment came and I needed to tell my mother I would be leaving soon. But, who was I fooling? I knew there was ever going to be a right time to deliver this news. Suddenly, I had a memory of nine years earlier. A tall man, with a lugubrious expression…
