A prayer without a deed is an arrow without a bow-string. A deed without a prayer is a bow-string without an arrow. Ella Wheeler Wilcox

'Tetsuya.' The boy looked at the stranger, startled. 'No one in this city has ever seen Tetsuya holding a bow,' he replied. 'Everyone here knows him as a carpenter.' 'Maybe he gave up, maybe he lost his courage, that doesn't matter to me,' insisted the stranger. 'But he cannot be considered to be the best archer in the country if he has abandoned his art. That's why I've been travelling all these days, in order to challenge him and put an end to a reputation he no longer deserves.' The boy saw there was no point in arguing; it was best to take the man to the carpenter's shop so that he could see with his own eyes that he was mistaken. Tetsuya was in the workshop at the back of his house. He turned to see who had come in, but his smile froze when his eyes fell on the long bag that the stranger was carrying. 'It's exactly what you think it is,' said the new arrival. 'I did not come here to humiliate or to provoke the man who has become a legend. I

would simply like to prove that, after all my years of practice, I have managed to reach perfection.' Tetsuya made as if to resume his work: he was just putting the legs on a table. 'A man who served as an example for a whole generation cannot just disappear as you did,' the stranger went on. 'I followed your teachings, I tried to respect the way of the bow, and I deserve to have you watch me shoot. If you do this, I will go away and I will never tell anyone where to

Instead of a scared little boy that night, Lee was calm as he watched his father´s, ¨...lovely face and not the blade.” Unquestionably, Lee´s objective in writing this story was to aware the world of the definition of a gift; Lee received a gift the night he lodged a silver shard into his hand. When Lee´s father removed the splinter and handed it to Lee, it was a gift. Though it was not wrapped in paper, the fragment of iron which had emerged from Lee´s palm was a gift, because it represented not only the patience and affection that Lee's father had for him but the strong bond between the two that Lee discovered that night, and as Lee so flawlessly puts to words, ¨...and I did not hold that shard between my fingers and think, Metal will bury me, christen it Little Assassin, Ore Going Deep for my…

Poverty and prostitution are major ethical issues in Brazil. Examining these issues in Brazil and how they have been dealt with can provide insight into the ethics of Brazilian culture and also the ethics of Sao Paulo. The moral standards determining the behavior of a typical Brazilian can be linked back to his or her worldview, which would commonly be based upon deism. Yeh Ling-Ling continued on explaining that “Mass immigration impacts minorities and the working class the most, the very people liberals want to protect.” I understand the author’s point of view, however immigrants came here for a better life, therefore they should not have a negative impact on many minorities because these people can get educated and become established citizens and will most likely be available to many resources than legal immigrants can. Immigration doesn’t just happen and leave a negative impact, there are multiple positive impacts that could even benefit the minorities as well such as; when a documented immigrant works, their wages are spent on necessities which benefits the country and the state which they reside,…

In Niccolo Ammaniti's masterpiece, I'm Not Scared, we explore the plight of human endeavour against all odds. We learn of the climate and poverty that makes the inhabitants of Acqua Traverse victims of circumstance, and ultimately drives them to persecute other people in the continuous pursuit of money and exceptional livelihoods. Clearly, Michele is not the only victim in Ammaniti's text, but it is through his endless determination to restore justice that ultimately demonstrates his morality, and separates him from everyone else in the story.…

Everyone has felt the pressure of societal expectations during their lifetime. The negative effects society brings on one’s life can lead to a feeling of rejection towards the people who do not conform to meet those standards. Gabriel García Márquez, author of Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and Albert Camus, author of The Stranger, both construct the external moral conflict of society versus the protagonist in order to critique the way society fails to accept the moral values of the people who differ from the norm.…

My father was never unkind, always welcoming, always laughing. He has a soft spot for travelers for he came from three generations of travelers. Those that came from the mountains or the lowlands are welcome in his hearth to rest their weary bodies after days of traveling. He welcomed everyone; the dark skinned highlanders who were known as headhunters and the pale foreign people. On the rare occasions that he paid attention to me as a child, he would tell me the story of how he came to my mother’s village. I will cherish the almost boyish mischief in his eyes when he began his tale. According to him, his grandfather Acop (named after the owl perched on his shoulder) came from a village of the head hunters. The old man Acop, always thought there must be more than just trying to survive in a land where the constant fear for your life and your family’s life is a normal part of living. He was born to be a headhunter yet part of him wanted a peaceful life. But he was a warrior, and the desire for peace is unlikely for one; so he prayed to Kabunyan for a sign. It was told that the Old man Acop started the journey south when he saw a deer with golden teeth. This was a deer like no other, for he motioned Acop to follow him.…

In today's world people are more concerned with their text messages than their neighbors. People are more worried about Jersey Shore than the bullying at local schools. But the real problem is not their ignorance, it is their indifference. They play the "life is unfair card," and move on. But not me. To change the world, it starts with a single person.…

The importance of progressing mankind’s collective values and morals can be seen from the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Throughout the story, people are interviewed, and different versions of the state of weather arise. Each response differentiates depending on the character’s values. The author uses weather as a motif to show people experiencing guilt, sadness, or carelessness. These emotions are stirred by some because of their hatred towards Santiago and by others because of not stopping the crime for honor. This shows that society has injustices that people overlook and should be determined in preventing it by progressing mankind’s values and morals.…
