In grade 6 I went to a great school called David Leeder Middle School. Even though none of my friends from grade 5 were in my class, I had an amazing year. All of my teachers were fabulous except for one. My math and science teacher was the worst teacher I had ever had. I remember that she would always yell at us for asking her questions about our work. In grade 7, I was also in David Leeder, but this was the best year I had ever had in my life. Every single teacher of mine were very good and they taught everything very thoroughly. Also, I made a lot of friends during this year. Academically I had the best year and I took part in extra curriculars such as soccer and volleyball. During these two years I went to Pakistan, I went to New York…

Segregation occurs within the African American race and also towards African Americans by society. Sometimes in life you can be segregated by your own race. Or maybe the outsiders see it as you being an “other” just because you have different opinions about certain things that they feel is right or wrong. Being the black sheep of a crowd within your very own kind is never a good feeling. In my own personal experience of life, I am always the other out of every group of black people which is my race. Various times I am embarrassed for the way the engage their ignorance into their actions and words. I am a black woman of intelligence and perseverance. I do not tolerate any type of foolery of people’s stupidity to make myself fit in with that particular crowd. I attend the University of Tennessee at Martin, a predominantly white school, where I am always overlooked by my words due to dominant opinions already made about us black folk. However, there was a very heated situation that happened recently that almost lead out of control. The night of the election really took a turn for the worse on campus. Needless to say that since there was a black man versus a white man running for presidency, there were lots of racist actions shown and racist words thrown. This situation made me feel very nervous and uncomfortable because I knew how the turnout would be. Once Barack Obama was announced as president again… things on campus got a bit out of hand. Almost all the black students were outside in the parking lot acting like wild monkeys. Yes I understand they were happy and all, but it shouldn’t have been that ridiculous. There were several white students hanging out windows bellowing racist remarks and insults. Once they started throwing out those dirty words, I felt sick to my stomach. Disgusted and irritated just by the sound of the word “Nigger”! Black students that…

Throughout my life, I have moved three times, lived in two different states, and been to five different schools. From these experiences, I have had the opportunity to meet a variety of different people, for this I am very grateful. I consider my first memories to have started when my family and I moved to Overland Park Kansas. The excitement of living in a new neighborhood, and house, was almost unbearable for my younger self. Once we moved in, I had a chance to explore the new surroundings and meet some of my best childhood friends. I also enjoyed six wonderful years in Elementary school. However, once middle school started, I observed the adoption of a more competitive atmosphere and the abandonment of standard teaching methods. This shift…

When I got to the age I could start school, I was excited. I started school like any other kids my age did. Kindergarten through first grade were fun for me. Second grade came and that is when things started happening that I did not like, and third grade I absolutely hated. I was being bullied and was ignored by teachers. I was viewed differently just because that school thought I should have been in special ed. They got their way for a little while, by having my parents sign some papers that would provide some extra help, but the contract never said I would be in special ed. My parents were absolutely furious when they found out I was in special ed when they did not give permission to the school to put me in there. So came the time to move. I started attending Udall Schools in fourth grade. I was welcomed by a class that was eager to know me and teachers willing to help. My teachers helped me learn the concepts I missed from the previous school.…

Elementary wasn’t a big deal because I was still able to pass and move on to the next grade. The only thing though is that I would find myself sitting out of recess for not doing a simple five question homework assignment. Having recess motivated me a little to do my homework just so I could go out and play basketball with my friends. I would always hear speeches by the counselors and teachers about doing your best, but it would go out one ear and out the other. At this point in my life, I obviously didn’t realize how important education was and I guess my only excuse was for being young and still being in elementary school.…

My experience in Junior High started the summer right after sixth grade, before seventh grade even started. That summer I was part of the Hoosier Hills Pact program, the program was made to help students with the transition between elementary and Junior High. In the program I spent every wednesday at the school with Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. Long, and some other students whose names I can’t remember. Every once and awhile we would take a field trip somewhere to get to know each other better and other times we would be talking about what we would need to know for future years. When we had free time we would sometimes go down to the lower gymnasium and play games using a parachute and just have fun. The Pact program really made…

I attended #68 Elementary School for my first grade year. We didn’t have to wear uniform, the work was easy. Honestly, I was living the life in my opinion. But by time my second grade year I found out I was moving schools again. I was going to attend Cold Springs Academy. This school did not only contain middle school with elementary kids, it was also an environmental magnet school. Inside I was very nervous that I wasn’t going to fit in and that I wasn’t going to be smart enough for the simple fact that I never been to a magnet…

Every time I was asked the question “where did you graduate from?” and I would respond that I earned my degree from X College. And they say wow that is a wonderful and well reputed college. It gives me such an enormous feeling inside me when I hear that. Fortunately, I had the greatest moment and the best experience when I was undergraduate student. Luckily, the schedule of their evening courses accommodated my busy schedule perfectly in a way that I was working full time running my business during the day and taking most of my classes at night. That is one of four major factors that I took into consideration that made me think that X School is the one that will help me attain my goals.…
