My Bilingual Identity
If I being truly honest I do not like including myself in a group. I am an Mexican American, and I am very proud of my cultures. Yet, I do identify myself more Mexican. Even though I live in a community where its mostly Hispanic. I like to be in place where its diverse. I enjoy meeting new people and learning from them. I choose Long Beach City College because how diverse it is, yet forty percent of our campus is Hispanic. The fascinating part is I feel a personal with the liberty of freedom of speech. I feel I identify with children that come from Hispanic families. I would be able to communicate with parents who are not bilingual. I believe it is advantage I can speak two languages because I will be able to help others in the community,

For as long as the United States has been a country, there has been controversy over establishing English as the official language. Even the idolized US President Theodore Roosevelt had a firm belief the US has “room for but one language in this country and that is the English language”. In a 2010 poll conducted by Rasmussen, eighty-seven percent of American voters said they would support making English the official language. Immigrants would also benefit from establishing English as the national language, because after learning English they would be able to actively participate in the democratic system employed throughout the US. Although the United States is a notorious melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities, language should be legislated, because having multiple languages spoken in the public isolates minorities.…

As the years pass I seem to become a part of more and more communities. Due to every job that I have had and all the new friends I make along to way. Through out high school I became apart of many different social discourses. Between the sports, friendships, jobs, and activities I became a part of, it almost seemed like everywhere I went I was talking in a different language. It's strange when you actually come to think about it, there are several different non-verbal and verbal cues among each community.…

American values are frequently forced upon students or workers. There are few times, where people look down on people who do not accept the American Way of Life. In “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” Anzaldúa wrote, “So if you really want to hurt me, talk badly about my language. Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity – I am my language” (Anzaldúa 445). Linguistic identity can be difficult for a bilingual person, being somewhere in-between two different culture is confusing and sometimes uncomfortable. A person can’t simply identify with one or the other because each culture has impacted an individual’s life. Being a bilingual also creates boundaries and limitations because the feeling of being disconnected from the language and culture a person is…

307). I’m in the process of trying to learn my language and it’s a lot of work and it just feels like it’s a lot of weight to carry knowing the Dine and English language. According to Diversity, 2008, as we internalize culture throughout our lives, it influences who we are, what we think, how we behave, and how we evaluate our surroundings (p. 2). Having our language and culture really changes you as a person instead of speaking and knowing the culture. I know I would be happy to be able to speak my language but than if you really want to be fluent you need to know the cultural side which in my opinion you pick and choose what you want to learn or…

I am a White female who grew up in a middle-class environment. I have no specific ethnic or cultural group that I identify with because I am of mixed race. As stated in one our readings there are no longer any “pure races.” My father is Lithuanian, while on my mother’s side there is Bohemian, Italian, and German. I consider myself to be American. While growing up I was exposed to many cultures. I had Whites, African Americans, and Asians in my neighborhood as well as in school. My mother taught me to be open to everyone, no matter his or…

Growing up and being raised far away from my country of birth, Mexico, I believe being Hispanic is not just a title I hold for being born in a Latin American country or that is based on how I look, how I dress, or how I act, but rather is keeping the history, my native language, the tradition and culture of my home country alive in me. Coming to this country at a young age did not allow me to enjoy the lifestyle of a “true” Mexican or Hispanic, but that didn’t stop me from learning the culture and the drive to expose my Hispanic background to others. I believe having the knowledge of not only my home country, but of other Latin American countries has helped me identify myself more with the Hispanic community. Because being Hispanic is a form of unity because it does not only mean that you are pure Mexican, Salvadorian, Columbian, or Spaniard, but it’s all together that we help define the Hispanic culture. It’s being multilingual and multicultural that makes us stand out. This is what makes us feel in family, that even though we don’t all come from the same country we share a beautiful language, we share the music, the art, and the food.…

A unique part of my family heritage and culture is the ability of speaking Spanish. Being bilingual is something that I really appreciate to have because it gives me certain advantages when it comes to applying for jobs or helping others. For example, I was doing community service and there was a woman who need assistance, but she couldn't speak English well. Fortunately, I was able to help her and I felt proud for that. Nonetheless, approximately the same situations apply in school from time to time. In conclusion, I feel pleased for this ability to speak the Spanish language.…

Being different when it comes to language is hard for others to accept. Some bilingual students in a study reported that they felt isolated and discriminated against by fellow classmates who were perhaps native to the area they were in. Most immigrants find it very hard to fit in because they either speak a different language or speak in a different way. What happens to some of these students is similar to what happens to illiterate students. Not in every case, but in many they are teased, ignored, or put into different kinds of classed due to their inability to keep up with the students in the regular class. The issue is that the students eventually may give up or fall into a depression due to their social situation. There are ways to fix…

Growing up I excelled in every educational aspect of school. However the stereotype for someone of my skin color did not allow for me to be both Mexican and smart. My Hispanic peers began to exclude me; the most common way they did that was by taking away my identity as a Mexican. I heard “Diego you white” an uncountable number of times throughout my schooling. I noticed that my grades and vocabulary would trigger that comment so I began to change the way I acted in order to fit in. It was not until recently that I realized the fault in changing and found a peaceful merge between the two speech communities.…

The identity we assume can often be a large part of how we see ourselves and how others around us can get a snapshot of our personalities, our origins, and how we wish to be portrayed. Sometimes the line between distinct identities can be blurred and a person can lose sight of who they are or where they feel like they belong most. Such can often be the case for immigrants as myself, who can sometimes struggle to find the identity that addresses the new life they have molded into and most represents their culture and experiences.…

“What makes me diverse?” When deciding whether or not to write a diversity statement, I created a mental list of the diverse groups to which I belong based on that question. But as I listed out these characteristics: half-Chicana, half white, ex-Mormon, a single mother, first-generation college graduate, I realized that I do not easily identify with any one particular race, religion or class. Instead, I have spent most of my life living in a world between the different groups to which I belong.…
