My Cultural Identity: Born And Raised On A Race Track With Horses
My Cultural Identity
My cultural identity is being born and raised on a race track with horses while working with horses and raising them with my family. With that when I turn 16 I’ll be able to ride for my family, which I don't want to do because there is a huge risk that I can be injured or even killed. All exciting stuff but not for me. I’m the type of person that enjoys doing the activity/sport instead of watching it.Most of the time at the track is sitting waiting for races and feeding the horses and going to the races.
Before a race we get the horse it’s shot and let them rest up in the stall and when it’s ten minutes before the race we put on their brittle and blinkers if they need it in the race. Then when they call the five minute

The mantra, "breathe in your nose and out your mouth," was the only thing running through my head as I attempted to complete the last half mile of my first cross-country meet, and at least it was running. I on the other hand, was not. I had started the race completely confident in my ability to run three miles, but after a grueling two and a half laps of tripping over tree roots, splashing through mud, and struggling over an enormous hill that marked the last quarter of the lap, I was just ready to go home and take a shower. When my feet crossed onto the threshold of the track where the finish line was positioned, I observed quite a few things. One, the conspicuous red timer was flashing numbers well into the mid-forties range. Two, at least half of the buses in the parking lot seemed long gone. My third and final realization did not occur to me until after I crossed the finish line. As I came to a stop near the water cooler, it finally dawned on me that I had concluded the race in last place.…

I think most would not be able to tell that deep down inside I'm a country boy at heart because of my outer appearance. However, it's a major contributing factor to my overall personality. Under the tutelage of my father, I began riding steers at around ten years old. It wasn't until I was 16 that my dad trusted me enough to hop on a bull. With consistent practice and love for the hobby I became a competitive rider. I even qualified for a regional rodeo held in Brazil but chose to pursue the sports realm instead. It was a win-win situation for me because not only was I good in riding, but I excelled at a national level in sports. Track and field quickly became the love of my teenage years. I spent so much time training and preparing for races that bull riding became an afterthought. During my track tenure, I made it all the way to the Junior Olympics running events such as the 200-meter dash and a leg on the relay team. Upon entering high schools, I accepted my destiny in sports. I knew that bull riding was very dangerous and no longer wished to participate in rodeos with injuries in the back of my mind. I put my best foot forward in football and track to earn the attention from major schools who offered me the opportunities to continue my educational and athletic careers at their institutions. I don't regret giving up bull riding to pursue an athletic…

The dining area of Rocking Horse Ranch was always hot and crowded during meal times, where the tired, overworked servers would bustle around attempting to provide excellent customer service for each and every inane request from the guests. I’ve heard that loud, hectic, quick-paced atmospheres filled with pretentious parents and scrambling children are almost calming sometimes. This atmosphere never brought me serenity; it gave me anxiety and stressed me out. Just the thought of sweeping melted ice cream cones off of the stained carpet and dry mopping the tiles floors gives me nightmares.…

Horse showing is not an easy task. It is hours upon hours of going in circles and patterns around the arena. You have to know all the right patters and ques as well as having everything spot on and perfect. It is perfect chaos. I smiled to myself at how perfect this show was going. I’ve only been showing for 2 years and so far I’ve gotten $10, 1 ribbon, and a good job from my trainer. If you were me, you would understand how exciting it was. My trainer, Dominique, is also the real owner of my horse and my same age best friend. I had never won anything at a horse show before. More than anything I got mad because I could never get Drifter to listen or did something wrong. So, yeah, It was a pretty special night. However, sitting here…

Typically, when one is getting ready to use a horse they go through a ‘grooming’ process. Grooming involves palpating the horse for any sore spots, sensitive areas or obvious injuries. Next, the horse is brushed down and cleaned to prepare the horse for riding. In the event that any injury is detected, the injury will be treated and the horse won’t be ridden. Most riders go through the grooming process and leave it at that. Some riders don’t groom at all. The importance of this simple stage alone cannot be overemphasized, as the horse is incapable of communicating any injuries other than to limp.…

Everyday I go to the barn at four o'clock to bring in our horses, give them grain, hay, and water. The chores at night would take about an hour maybe a little while longer, but they quickly taught me to be responsible. While brining in the horses sounds easy, thats not always the case. At one point while I was bringing in my first horse I looked down at the legs and everything seemed to be fine. No cuts, no scrapes, and the horse was walking how he should be. I hear a loud noise coming from down the hall. The horse I was learning and myself jumped out of out skin. I quickly ran and put my horse in a random stall. I slammed the door and here comes a horse running loose down the isle. I turn around and throw my hands in the air. “Wooooo” I shouted sternly. The horse comes to a sudden halt. I grabbed the horse and walked him back towards his stall. This wasn't unusual, sometimes horses escape when you open the gate to grab a different horse. As I am walking this now wired horse back to his stall I hear a small should coming from out side.…

    Roller Derby

This week I attended a one-time screening for a movie called Derby Baby. It was a documentary film on women who play roller derby. It was a small screening in a town called Wilmette. Over the past year I have been introduced to the culture and world of roller derby by my girlfriend. I have been able to experience many different events related to the culture, but this movie brought a different life to the culture of roller derby. I never looked at the sport or hobby as a culture but have realized what a culture it is for many people. The clothing that is worn, the love, the passion, the life, the commitment; these are all so different that my lifestyle. People who love roller derby commit their lives to it, their free time; their friends are all in roller derby or volunteer. The sport is volunteer ran, the games, the practices, the players, no one is paid for what they do. Not many cultures of sports are like this, which makes them very unique. I used to find myself judging the people in roller derby, assuming they were all outgoing and spontaneous people, but over the past year and from this movie I have learned it is an outlet for many. It is a place where quiet people can bring out a different side of them and a place where the outgoing can be more crazy and exciting. Roller derby is not just a game for entertainment; it is a way of life for many. The level of commitment depends on the individual. A player not only plays but volunteers, joins a committee within the league, coaches, trains, parties, they do it all. You can also have a love for derby and not play; you can be a referee or a fan who is highly involved. The possibilities are never ending. It is a passion that many do not know about, like many other cultures it is waiting to be…

My third choice was “marital,” and I am single and love to be single. Although currently I am in a relationship and he wants to progress to the next level, I am not ready. Do I think I’ll ever be ready? No. I feel after being constricted as a child, going through two severe domestic violence relationships with physical, mental, verbal, and physical abuse I just don’t want to experience any bondage. With my career it’s very demanding, my mom could not pursue her educational dream until she divorced my father, my sister couldn’t keep her children because of the abuse they suffered at her ex-husband’s hand. I know I shouldn’t base my decision off of other people’s situation, but they do play a big part in my decision to stay single.I believe that people where different masks at different times and eventually they have to take it off. I feel safer knowing that there will be no constrictions when it comes to me pursuing my educational and career goals. My field is very time consuming, I don’t have time with work and school to spend with other people.…
