My Cultural Memory Project Analysis
The assertions of Japanese officials demonstrate that after long years that had passed, Japanese government officials were still denying the sexual crimes they committed toward these women. Additionally, the refusal of the Japanese government to acknowledge their crimes shows the disputes between hegemonic history and memory as their claim implies that memories of individuals were not enough evidences to prove such crime. However, memory is not just about remembering an event, but “it includes structures of feeling and all the ways that people with culturally specific identifications remember precisely” (Oliva-Alvarado 4). This means that the memories of these comfort women do not only include their experiences, but also the pain, trauma, grief, and shame, and all of these are with them throughout their life. Just like Catalina Lorenzo, one of the Filipino comfort women, stated, “Do you think we have forgotten what had happened?” Everyday we wake up and it’s in our head. Using the train to depict the testimonies of comfort women is my way “to [blur] the lines between literature, art, history, and social science [to] present a way to deal with the unspoken, the hidden” (Kindle Location 3125). By comparing their plight to a journey in the train, my aim is for people to easily relate or visualize the ongoing struggles that these comfort women are going through to receive the apology and formal acknowledgement that they deserved. Additionally, by doing so, I hope that the stories of Filipino comfort women will serve as an inspiration for others to speak up and give a voice to silent narratives that they might have been keeping for so long.     Throughout history it has been understood that we attempt to comprehend and remember the past in order to not repeat certain events in the future, but we also do this for another purpose, to understand our identities individually and collectively during periods of grief. The September 11th day of remembrance is our nation’s annual honor to the heartbreaking attacks of 9/11. On this day we as a nation can honor the lives that were lost and in turn evaluate our identities separately and jointly. “ ‘This collective trauma marks memories and changes future identities, whether or not the traumatizing event(s) was experienced directly.’ When meaning can be made from traumatic experience, however, it too becomes incorporated into collective identity. Then, the process of reparation, reconstruction, and symbolic healing can proceed” (Pivnick 505).     Representing an ‘absolute truth’ is impossible. Inherent human bias affects both history and memory. We unintentionally falsify parts of the past in order to emphasise the nature of past events we find central to our individual beliefs. Therefore we are challenged with obvious limitations in representing the ‘truth’. The interplay of history and memory however, leads to a rather satiable and tangible level of truth. Nonetheless, it is yet to be seen that this satisfiable level of truth will be riddled with bias as it is human nature to have an opinion/perspective that makes reconciling (accepting) memory and history a great challenge. Ultimately, this satiable level of truth creates compelling and unexpected insights into the past as assumptions that have previously been thought as true and views can change when face with uncertainty (or challenged by evidence). In order to understand this concept it is important to first understand the concept of collective memory. Collective memory is the emotional quality that is given to past events.     After both reading Kazuo Ishiguro’s elliptical novel, ‘A Pale View of Hills’ and now Brian w. Shaffer’s analysis of the book, I have been forced to rethink the initial notion that possessed me of the books obscure meanings and concepts, that Ishiguro so deftly weaves. The story itself is a powerfully constructed enigma that within it contains yet more ambiguous and obscure implications. Shaffer, in his analysis, manages to capture the very essence of the novel, basing, it seems his entire analysis around the theme of memory. My brain having not quite caught up with this vital genesis, when reading through the article, began to feel all those elusive and pale images collapse into place. Not only was Shaffer’s article a breath of fresh air, but it far furthered my imagination and understanding of what goes on behind a persons apparent story. Or perhaps, it would be more accurate to call it a human beings projected persona. What was most fascinating was Shaffer’s take on Ogata-San’s ‘obsession’ with Shigeo Matsuda, a young budding communist, whose views led him to attack Ogata-San’s lifelong profession, claiming him to have assisted, albeit unknowingly, Japan’s ‘most evil disaster in her entire history’ (147), and to have lead the country in a ‘misguided direction’. Shaffer likens Ogata-Sans obsession with Shigeo to Etsuko’s similarly obvious obsession with recalling ‘that’ summer, despite repeated claims otherwise. “There is nothing to be gained in going over such matters again” (91), “However such things are in the past now, and there is little to be gained in going over them here” (94), “I recall”, “I remember”, “I see now, in hindsight”, “in retrospect”. Furthermore, Shaffer highlights Ogata-Sans refusal and obvious vehemence towards Shigeo to Etsuko’s blatant refusal to speak of matter’s in the past with her second and living daughter Niki (89).
