I have a great interest in science. Biology has given me the opportunity to study human anatomy with a focus on diseases and complications of the human body. Studying chemistry has allowed me to understand processes inside the body in detail along with the consequences of resistant drugs including their structure, history and production. Seeing the work of dedicated professionals in general practice was an invaluable experience. Witnessing consultations in surgery and home visits demonstrated how a personal approach is used to address the complex needs of patients.
I observed and appreciated the professionalism and empathy necessary for diagnosis, with the approachable characteristics needed for good relationships with patients and colleagues and the importance to prepare for each appointment and update medical data.
One particularly valuable experience was working with the practice nurse regarding nutrition and diet. We discussed complex health issues such as type 1 diabetes, a disease my mother has had from a young age. Investigating the disease and the complexities behind diet, activity and insulin balance that diabetics must consider was compelling.

Playing tennis for 8 years gave me the opportunity to attend a tennis leader course to coach young children. This allowed me to work with a team of coaches organizing, planning and participating in team events for family fun days.
The expedition was the most challenging part; it developed my teamwork and leadership skills through boosting team morale and taking charge of navigation and route planning. Last year I participated in the National Citizen Service award, I discovered the importance of unity in a team and experienced feeling valued as part of a team.
My part-time job at Marks and Spencer requires me to work with a team of colleagues and range of customers to produce the best customer service, whilst understanding how to communicate with people when there may be communication barriers. I have received two awards at M&S for my energy and teamwork on the sales floor.
I have also learnt transferable skills: to adhere to deadlines, work in a fast moving environment and realise that my actions and decisions impact on my team; I also learnt to balance my time between my job and schoolwork.
