My first day in high school was so overwhelming. My heart was racing and my legs were shaking. I was excited and nervous at the same time. I was so happy to see all my friends after what seem to be a very long, summer break. Though I was glad to see all my friends, I could not help but think about what classes I was going to attend. Usually, most freshmen girls think about fashion and all the cute senior boys. On one hand, I was thinking about all the fun, exciting, and new activities that would take place as a freshman. On the other hand, I was more concerned about passing high school at the top of my class because this is where the real world begins. As I reached the classroom doors, my heart raced faster and butterflies began to flutter in my stomach. Before I entered the red door with the tall, black letters reading “Welcome Freshmen”, I took a deep breath as though I was getting prepared to perform on a stage in front of millions of people. Shaking inside my skin, I twisted the bronze doorknob and opened the door. I thought that the class would be quiet, but it was filled with at least twenty-five freshmen that were socializing with one another. I sat at the first empty desk in my sight. The teacher was not there yet, so I began to socialize with everyone else. Minutes later, the door swung open and our teacher entered. She was short in height and weighed about one hundred and forty-five pounds. She had black, silky, well-trimmed hair and wore plenty of makeup. Her eyes were brown and they were the size of an owl’s. She had a round face and a cute button nose. She walked over to her desk and neatly placed her books upon it. The frown on her face gave me an impression that she was mean but after her short, well-spoken introduction, my assumptions changed. She had the voice of a soprano and was a very nice and inviting woman. Her name was Mrs. Hutchinson. When she finished introducing herself, she handed the class our first
assignment. The instructions read these words, “Think about your life and how you would want to change it. In a paragraph, write about what you would want to be or what your dream job would be ten years from now.” I was stunned because I never thought about what I wanted my profession to be until this day. As time passed, I sat in my desk clueless about what I wanted to be. I began to think about the many activities I loved, my favorite subject and my talents. After I overloaded my brain, it finally hit me that I loved math and computers. First, I started to think about the majors associated with math such as a math instructor, an accountant and a financial analyst. Then I began to think about the jobs and professions connected with computers such as computer engineering, software and hardware database programmer and a computer programmer. For that particular moment I had to choose a profession for my assignment, so I chose an accountant. After school I went home and researched the professions I thought about for my assignment. What interested me the most was computer engineering because it was affiliated with both math and computers. I continued to research the job’s description and how much a computer engineer makes. As I read more about the job, I came across a sentence that stated that a responsibility of a computer engineer was to break down the computer and reassemble it. I thought to myself this would be the perfect profession for me because I had done previous work pertaining to this specific responsibility when I was 12. My senior year was coming to an end and it was time for me to begin applying for financial aid and colleges. I was unsure about whether I should go to a community college or a university so I began to search for schools with my desired major instead. I was introduced to so many
colleges but I had to find the ones that fit my financial budget which meant my choices were limited. I concluded that Bishop State Community College was the perfect choice. It was time for orientation and registration. I was in an auditorium filled with new students for the upcoming school year. There were BSCC staff members, instructors and motivational speakers. I listened to everyone that spoke about the school but the motivational speaker caught my attention. Not only did she motivate me to go to college, she also motivated me to stay in college and pursue my dreams that I had. After her speech, I had to wait in lines for hours to get registered for my classes. Two days later, I began my first classes as a BSCC alumni and it was also my birthday. I will never forget that day. It is the year of 2013 and I am still a BSCC Wildcat accomplishing my goals and finishing my dreams. At the start of my college year, I thought that it was the most challenging experience. Now that I am almost finished with my major degree plan, I am realizing that college is fun and an experience you would want to cherish. In May 2014, I would be completing step one into getting my dream profession by obtaining my Computer Information Systems, AAS degree. I can finally say “I did it!”
