This quote is all I need when I am asked what my duty to America is. It manages to hold the answer to this difficult question in a mere 13 words. Those 13 words, cover my duty of nationalism, my duty to do what is right, and my duty to scrutinize the bureaucracy. It is these 13 words and the three ideas that they encompass, that have revealed to me my responsibilities as an American.

However, that often doesn't seem to be the case. Disrespect of all sorts runs rampant in our society. One of the worst of which is the disrespect of the flag and the people’s sacrifices that is represents. A practice of which is common upon the most self-entitled and artificially victimized people of our society. These people, take it upon themselves to claim that they are oppressed, and that American society is just stacked against them. They then use and exploit their freedoms given to them by the very system that supposedly oppresses them, to burn, step on, or mistreat the flag in other ways. Scrutinizing the bureaucracy. Our government is a very integral part of keeping our people free. This however does not necessarily mean that the people who run it will want to keep the common people free. There are many who would have the bureaucracy bent to their will, and if we do not stand on watch for them, they might just do so. You see, all it really takes to corrupt the bureaucracy is to speed it up. As Eugene McCarthy once said:”The only thing that saves us from the bureaucracy is inefficiency. An efficient bureaucracy is the greatest threat to liberty”.
