My Dyslexia In Elementary School
I embrace that learn and process information differently than most kids, but my dyslexia is often falsely considered a disability that cripples my potential to do well and how intelligent I am. In elementary school, more specifically third grade, in many instances I misspelled simple words and I frequently mixed up my “b’s” and “d’s”. I would spell words phonetically, so words like “said” would be spelled like “sed,” and words like “bed” would frequently be spelled like “deb”. Not to mention how frustrating it was for me to understand the difference between my left and right. Reading long passages took ten to fifteen minutes longer to understand than what was actually allotted. If I wanted to read aloud to my peers I could rarely read the words without stopping and stuttering on every other word in order to read the words correctly; in the rare cases I could read the words on the page with little stuttering I could not understand what I was reading, I was then forced to go back and read the passage two or three more times to understand the basics of the story. …show more content…
Towards the middle of third grade, my parents had me tested for a learning disability, and the results came back that I had dyslexia, but no one told me. My parents knew I had dyslexia, and my teachers were made aware that I had dyslexia, but I was still ignorant to my disability. Even though no one told me about my diagnosis, teachers began giving me extra time on my assessments. Though I still struggled to grasp certain concepts, I always got extra time on my assessments and in-class

    Believe it or not I have not always been as bright as I am now. There was a time when I was the kid who struggled in many of his classes, not the one that people went to for advise on a subject. I hated school because it was extremely hard for me. I was born on May the 11, 1994 in Nashville tennessee. I came from a well to do family and when i was of age was enrolled into private school where i spend the rest of my schooling up through high school. It was evident at an early age that there was something different about me. the first sign was my speech impediment, for the life of me i could not say the letter S every sentence i spoke was a struggle. Then it was reading and spelling. I was behind most of the other kid in both, I read slower and could not spell the same level words as the other kids. It was so bad that in kindergarten i was made to repeat it. Then came elementary school which went much better then preschool had gone, but i still struggled with things. Then in the third grade my parent took me to get tested to determine my mental ability. That is when i found out i am dyslexia. dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by difficulty reading, spelling, and in young children affects there speech. This was devastating to me, because as a third grader all i wanted to be was normal, and at the felt like people would think i was retarded. through all of this my parents only encouraged me, telling me that i could overcome this setback. That is exactly what i set out to do. Starting in the fourth grade every afternoon i would leave school and go straight to tutoring at the learning lab. I hated this because while all my friends were playing at home i was studying but i knew that it would be worth it. My parents also made me take adrenal which i thought was super embarrassing and i can remember to this day hiding them in the cracks of the table or under my chair so i would not have to take them.…

    The BDA Dyslexia Friendly Schools Pack for Teachers (2009) provides an overall guide of what dyslexia is and how a dyslexia friendly school should be delivering education to the dyslexic learner. The writers begin with a definition of dyslexia stating that “dyslexia is a learning difference, a combination of strengths and weaknesses”. This is an informative definition as opposed to the recommendation of Norwich et al (2005) that exemplary schools should promote an inclusive school system whereby dyslexia is considered but not in isolation. The BDA (2009) state that importance ought to be placed on acknowledging dyslexia as “ a specific learning difficulty” as a specific learning difference” so that teaching is inclusive and focuses on all learners rather than just the dyslexic learner who may already feel something is wrong with them.     I visited four different stations at the dyslexia stimulation. At the first station, the group I was in was asked to write with our non dominant hand. With my left hand, I attempted to make designs, put dots in the squares, write the alphabet, and trace designs.
