My Experience As A Peer Mentor
1. Describe the experiences here at Stonehill which have motivated and prepared you to be an effective Peer Mentor. Last June I was extremely nervous for my journey ahead at Stonehill College. When touring the school, I was very comfortable on campus and felt the school would be perfect for what I wanted in a college, but I was still very anxious of the unknown. At orientation I was placed with a random group of people and slowly got to know each and every one of my fellow peers. The entire experience was so informational and comforting to know that everyone in my orientation group felt the same way I did. The Peer Mentors made each and every member of the group feel accepted and comfortable. I was inspired by the Peer Mentors and how passionate …show more content…
They should have good leadership skills but also should not be overwhelming towards the new students. A great Peer Mentor should be a good leader but can also let others take charge whenever necessary. They should also be considerate towards their co-leaders and accept suggestions from other Peer Mentors without feeling criticized. I have a past history of taking on many leadership roles such as the President of an honor society as well as a co-counselor to many children at a camp. These positions have allowed me to explore the perfect combination between leader and team player. I am very aware of the roles I take on and I understand what is expected of me in each job. Being a Peer Mentor would give me a chance to be a leader but also work with others on how to better the experience of all of the incoming Freshman. Whenever I work I know what my responsibilities are and I take on the role expected of me to the best of my abilities. If I am needed as a teacher, I can be a leader and make sure the new students are on task. While if I am needed as a friend I can be there for all of the incoming freshman. Since I am an education major I feel this opportunity is especially helpful to further my experience as a

My academic, professional and social skills have increased immensely since I have begun this program. Through this process I have gained a deeper understanding of what this chapter has to offer me. Primarily, a network of men with similar goals and similar backgrounds determined to develop each other. Learning is a lifelong process, and to join this network I would have access to unrivaled mentorship and experience. Furthermore, I would have the opportunity to give the same mentorship back to the newer members of the organization. Lastly,…

Throughout my high school years, I maintained various leadership roles. The first of which was serving as a section leader in the marching band for three years. As a section leader, I was the example of how the section should act, present, and conduct them. I was also the captain of the golf and tennis teams, first leading by examples through my actions and then through my playing skills. At my home church, I am the Youth Director providing an example of how to live as a young Christian despite the temptation of peer pressure. While here at JMU, I am currently serving as a mentor at the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Boys and Girls Club to disadvantaged to youth. Just furthering my education beyond high school is the primary and first example of leadership. The kids at the club can look to me and see that I was once just like them but I’ve pushed through and maybe they can…

I believe that I am qualified to be a peer mentor because I live by the saying “Abstain to Attain” everyday. As a young adult among so much peer pressure, it is hard not to cave in. I understand though, drugs, sex, and drinking alcohol isn’t worth it. I have too much to lose in life if I get pregnant at a young age, or if I become an alcoholic or a drug addict. My family is counting on me as well. I will be a first generation student and I will not let them down because I gave into peer pressure and went down the wrong path.…

Throughout high school, I was involved in multiple extracurricular activities, including, but not limited to, Friends of Rachel and Desert Vista Peer Tutoring (DVPT). During my time as the secretary of Friends of Rachel, I managed all the attendance and arranged all meeting times for the club. I especially enjoyed being the receptionist for Friends of Rachel because through my tasks, I was able to develop my organizational and planning skills. Meanwhile, during the two days per week I spent at DVPT, I tutored hundreds of students in subjects ranging from mathematics, science, history, English, and Spanish. I, also, took on the role of receptionist for DVPT where I facilitated the entire tutoring center by pairing tutors and tutees, marking…
