Peter Neufeld and Barry Scheck, the co-founders of the Innocence Project, which works to exonerate those who were wrongly convicted and fights for equality in the criminal justice system, are a social entrepreneurial unit I identify with. Following the release of a study establishing that 70% of wrongful convictions were the results of incorrect eyewitness reports, Neufeld and Scheck took it upon themselves to help the lives of those falsely identified and imprisoned, who were too poor or oppressed by the bias of the justice system to unbury themselves from their judicial graves. I find this especially important because those who are already oppressed in our society are silenced further with a system that is supposed to protect and give justice…
The legal system of the United States has been overwhelmed by underfunding and excessive caseloads, which has placed a substantial burden on public defenders. Unfortunately, public defenders are the hardest working attorneys and sector of the legal system because they are severely understaffed. Therefore, they are represented by public defenders, which is a granted constitutional right in the case of Gideon v. Wainwright. This case specified that states are required to provide defense attorneys to defendants convicted of a felony or serious crime that cannot provide attorney representation for themselves. According to Brunt (2015), “approximately 80% of the offenders that are charged with a felony are indigent.” This is a relatively large number…
While I always wanted to be a lawyer, the moment I read the book The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander, I knew exactly what type of law I wanted to practice. I want to be a public defender. I am incredibly passionate about criminal justice and fighting for the rights of those who cannot fight for themselves. This summer I will have the opportunity to work with public defenders who specifically represent death row inmates in their appeals. I will have the incredibly unique opportunity to work with an office that has recently argued in front of both the Florida Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. Thus, not only will I get to work with clients who need immediate assistance, I’ll also get to work on cutting-edge issues. While I…

In my field placement I have the responsibility of ensuring all three aspects of the criminal justice system The United States Attorney who represents the People of The United States of America, who are tasked with prosecuting the accused. The Judge, as well as the Federal Public Defender who defends the accused. I am responsible for equipping them with an understanding of the systems of oppression and disenfranchisement have played a role in…
Public defenders don’t put values on money – they are mostly short on budget all the time – and they are the only ones who stand up for people who cannot afford, or whom no one wants to defend for. According to the United States Constitution sixth amendment, everyone has a right to have an attorney when they are arraigned in the court. Public defenders are the leading figures that follow the sixth amendment recognized by the government. But there is also a dilemma the public defenders would have to face. Michael Becker told us that it makes him feel more pressured when he knows the defendant is innocent, because if he loses the trial, he feels guilty for not being able to prove his innocence. However, If I were a public defender, the biggest dilemma I would have is to overcome the inner madness at the convict, particularly when the defendant shows no signs of regret; especially the case of psychopaths, who cannot sympathize with the victims and enjoy the agony of the victim or enjoy the murder itself. For example, Richard Ramirez, a serial killer with 20 victims, said after he was caught “I love to kill people. I love watching them die. I would shoot them in the head and they would wiggle and squirm all over the place, and then just stop. Or I would cut them with a knife and watch their faces turn real white. I love all that blood. I told one lady to give me all her money. She said no. So I cut her and pulled her eyes out.” If my client told me that, I would feel an urge to flip everything upside down. I cannot picture myself defending those horrendous criminals who trampled the victim’s rights…
Melody has told me numerous times since taking a lead role on with a pro-bono program with Legal Aid of Northeastern New York that “I love what I do and I love who I do it for”. This passion is evident given her advancement through the Legal Aid organization and will be asset to your program. Her entire purpose of pursuing an MLS is so that she can be even more equipped to serve the community. Another strength of Melody’s is her leadership qualities, only after being in New York for two months she is already a member of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York and the Albany Bar Association. She actively seeks law-related volunteer and leadership opportunities within Legal Aid and the professional organizations of which she is a member. Her organizational skills make her a great candidate for the online MLS program; Melody is able to manage clients and activities with her pro-bono program in her Legal Aid office as well as recruit pro-bono attorneys for her program during various networking dinners and conference after work. In addition to a demanding career with Legal Aid, she still manages to make time to coordinate community service events with a non-profit called “Support the Port” which serves minorities in Wilmington,…
Sitting in the living room floor watching Perry Mason as a young girl, I never wavered on what I was going to be when I grew up. From the age of about two years old it was crystal clear to me. I was going to go to one of the best law schools in the country and become a great criminal defense trial attorney. The road to becoming a criminal defense attorney is not an easy one. It is filled with tests, degrees, stress, reading, studying, tuition, and more. But for most people that choose this path, they are pursuing this achievement like an Olympic medalist trains for the gold. Achieving the dream is worth all of the blood, sweat and tears (Robert W. Davis, Jr. Attny, personal communication, February 5, 2013). In my discourse community as a future attorney, there are several important steps to follow that I will explain in my essay.…
The Innocence Project is a non-profit legal organization that exonerates innocent individuals through the use of DNA testing. Moreover, they work to reform the criminal justice system in order to prevent further injustices that will occur. The United States criminal justice system is centuries years old and does not live up to the same standards as it once did. The American people are not equal. Minorities and the lower classes are not treated equally in our justice system. There have been far too many advancements in our world today to still be wrongly accused for crimes and paying the ultimate price for them. The system is starving for reform to ensure that every single American citizen is equal and treated accordingly to his or her inalienable…

This scenerio would lead me to interview her and her neighbors along with others that live in the home. I would seek to see if there is an enormous amount of traffic in and out of the home. The criminal justice system needs reform to avoid wrongful convictions and unprepared re-entry to society. Each year, thousands of people are convicted of crimes they do not commit. A few main causes of wrongful convictions are eyewitness misidentifications, government misconduct, and bad lawyering. In many cases, those exonerated of the crimes they didn’t commit and now they longer have the proper resources to re-enter society successfully.…

As an adult I would want to pursue a profession in criminal justice. I haven’t made up my mind on whether I want to be a criminal investigator or a lawyer.
