My Experience with New York

Experiencing New York as a Marching Band Member The city lights, attractive sights, and bustling lifestyles were what I had only seen on television and dreamed of at night. I had only heard stories of this place, always imagining what it would be like to live in such a colossal city. This was a gift; my chance to do exactly what my mother did her senior year of high school. The people and places I saw, the events and experiences I got to see and do, and the memories I have the honor of carrying with me are all reasons why this trip to travel to New York City has been one of the most memorable experiences I have had in my young life so far. Before I even signed up on the roster, I had to know if I could afford to go. Given that this was an optional trip, it was asking for a plethora of money to be shelled out by the band members and families. Though the trip was announced in September and was planned for March, money became tight. My parents told me I would not be able to go, and that they were sorry for disappointing me. As I gave out my wishes to my friends who were going, I prayed that I would miraculously still be able to go. After our Michigan Christmas road trip, my family and I stopped in Virginia with my grandmother for a vacation away from vacation. What I didn’t know was that my grandmother talked to my parents about paying for me to go on the trip in full as a graduation gift. They kept it a secret until my mother went through my band director, who is like a second father to me, to see if there was any way I could still go. As if it was meant to be, someone dropped out a couple months before the trip and I was put on the roster! I came home one day, still down about my friends going to New York without me, and was told that grandma wanted me to call her. After both my parents were by me, I dialed her number. Once the usual small talk was finished, my grandma asked about this New York trip I

All my life I have lived Pearl, MS. I never went out of state for vacation, even though I have always wanted to travel and explore the world. Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to go to my parent’s hometown: Santa Catharina, OA. My parents would always show me pictures and videos of their hometown that infatuated me. I would constantly ask my parents to take me, until they finally took me on thanksgiving break. When I arrived to Santa Catharina, I did not expect to see the immense amount of difference that I perceived. The city of Pearl has different geography, cars, and opportunities from Santa…

We all felt fear for ourselves, each other, and communicated as a team. I felt prideful to be a New Yorker, but it took a turbulent experience to feel this. I experienced this sense of community a few weeks later in Midtown when a fake cab driver pepper sprayed me in hopes of taking my wallet. Shaking in pain as I escaped the car and blindly walked into a bar for help, New Yorkers rose again and ran to assist me. As three men chased the car and a group of women aided my eyes, I noticed the kind hearts of strangers once again.…

New York is an amazing city, no wonder everyone talks about New York. It is one of the most agglomerations in the world at the center of the Metropolitan Area. Born and raised in South Paterson, I wouldn’t ask for anything better. As I walk down the block I notice how people that come from around the world can get along in such a small city. I would see people representing their ethnicity, backgrounds, religion, and even their traditions in many ways. From the flags being hung up and to the candles and Christmas trees that are lit; I enjoyed watching fellow friends and neighbors of mine knowing that they are proud of their own race. Coming from a busy city, I always called it the “glimpse of New York”. People view New York as a place where it’s full of activity. Correspondingly, the streets of Paterson are the same. Commencing the overcrowded produce markets and the NJ transits stopping at every…

New York, New York! I am finally done with high school and can enjoy a relaxing vacation with my best friend. “The stories of this place are so cool!” Said Octavia. “I know! Like the one about Philippe Petit, the guy who walked across the Twin Towers on a steel cable!” I told her(Abbott 10). We arrived at our hotel room at 8:30 am, and we had a tour of the city at 9. We had to start getting ready. “Our room has a balcony!” Yelled Octavia. The view was breathtaking. Every gust of wind that hit my face made me want to live in New York forever. It was 8:40, and I hadn’t even started getting ready because I was taking in the view. “Look,” I said to Octavia. We both turned around to take a glimpse at the beautiful Twin Towers when at 8:46 a plane…

I, however, was confused. This was not the mainland! Why were we not in New York City? I confronted Mama with my confusions, and discomfort stirred in my stomach, for her voice was grave as she said, "We can't go to the city quite yet my love. Tessa, this is Ellis Island, although I've heard rumors that it is also called the 'place of broken hearts and dashed dreams.'" "Oh Mama, whatever is that supposed…

New York City always had a core identity which is doing whatever it takes to “make a buck.” The most iconic period in the history of New York City was from 1783-1825. There were also many “New Yorkers” in this time period. A “New Yorker” is someone that is face paced, hardworking, and not afraid of change. Between the years 1609-and 1825 many important events and developments occurred in New York City history, which made the city that it has become today.…

You might not think so, at first - for the city is undeniable madness, a model in many aspects of all is wrong in the modern United States. Walking through the city streets is an experience, like icons to the modern building, the first to the power of money. Despite all the hype, the movie image sentimentalism, Manhattan - the real core of the central island and the city - has a lot of romance: whether it is the flickering lights of the skyscrapers of downtown, you speed across the Queensboro Bridge, 4:30 Life In Greenwich Village, or simply a waste of Staten Island ferry in the morning, you really would have to be made of stone not to be moved it…

In elementary and junior high school, I always enjoyed world history classes and learning about other countries and their cultures. Throughout high school, my interest continued to grow as I took additional history, social studies, and current events courses. A family trip to New York City also influenced my desire to major in international studies. Before the trip, I always thought of New York City as a crazy tourist destination, but after spending five weeks in the city, I now see it completely differently. New York City is truly a cultural melting pot and its diversity makes it one of the greatest cities in the world. While I was there, I immersed myself into the diversity that is New York City. I met many interesting people as we visited the different ethnic communities like China Town, Korea Town and Little Italy. Meeting so many new and interesting people and trying different foods excited me. It was interesting to hear their personal stories, what life is like in their country, and what brought them to the United States. During this time, I had never felt more passionate about traveling and learning about different cultures than I did in those five weeks. When I returned home, I knew I wanted to find a career that would allow me to travel and meet people from all different walks of…

For growing up in a small town in northeastern Wisconsin, I have had an abundance of life experiences so far. Some of my experiences that stand out to me include traveling all over the state to play baseball and basketball, attending a presidential speech, going golfing with a professional baseball player, playing in a state championship game, volunteering for a number of different causes, and traveling to a variety of places all over the nation. I’ve been to the top of the Empire State Building, looked down on Yosemite National Park, toured myself through Alcatraz, viewed Mount Rushmore, checked out the White House in Washington, D.C., walked around Disneyworld in Florida, taken a picture in front of the bean in Chicago, and taken in all of the history at the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. I am one who values experiences over things. My many experiences have shaped who I am today and have developed my strengths. For me, it is humbling and inspiring to view New York City from above. It is experiences like these that motivate me to be the best person that I can be and to set high goals for myself that I know I can…

My first experience in the city was the Guggenheim Museum, a place of modernistic culture. Everything about the art left me in absolute awe. I had never seen something like “Asian Pheromonic Ant Art” or seen Claude Monet’s original Water Lilies. After that small culture shock, we walked to downtown Manhattan and found our way to a charming little place call the Magnolia Bakery. The birch wood floors, small dots of icing, and smell of brewing coffee made me feel calm in a voltaic city. New York is filled with thousands of small patiseries, but this little alcove, the feeling of home definitely had the most of an effect on…
