My extracurricular activities
Essay

My involvement in extracurricular activities is the way to help those who need attention and warmth: children, senior citizens and people with deadly diseases. Having good grades and submitting assignments on time does not make you a good student yet. I respect people who contribute to others and not just concern about their own well-being. Doing kind things for people that I don't even know, gives me feelings of satisfaction and usefulness. My contributions are not huge but I tried to give some of my time to those who are ill, disabled or having a tough time in their life.

One of my experiences was trip to Eric Johnson House to cook Thanksgiving dinner for people with HIV. Unfortunately, some of the tenants had to live their families because of their health problems. Man and women live there temporary, until they ready to afford their own place. They were very touched that we came, while others turn away from them. We had a very good time at dinner: we were joking; telling stories making them to forget about their worries.

Visiting St. Peters Orphanages is one of the favorite activities among PTK members. If the weather is nice and sunny, we have picnic outdoors and if it is rainy day we play games inside. Because children are sensitive and vulnerable, we got specific instructions how to play with them.

Also, I went to Morris View nursing home with other PTK members on one the Saturdays. It was a relaxing experience for older people; we played game "Bingo", just to break from gloomy and routine atmosphere at the nursing home. Many of them needed help to get around and help with a game itself. Seeing sick and handicapped made me feel sad, but I gain passion by being in that atmosphere. I noticed how easily they become happy. Guessing the right number was very exciting for them .The winners would get reward-chocolate candy and senior citizens were happy like children. Observing them, made me think how unhappy we get sometimes without real reason and

While at the Stollery in Edmonton, I had the chance to talk with a few people and how the community has helped them. Almost every person I talked to that day mentioned in some way shape or form that the amount of prayers they had been receiving from people in the community was phenomenal. It wasn’t that the community was providing meals, cash or a place for them it was the joy in knowing that people were praying for them. They knew that the prayers may not be answered immediately or ever but that there was support from the community that they belonged to. As well as knowing that they weren’t alone that there were other people struggling with the same thing and that their community was behind them 100%. Another way these people felt the community meeting their needs was that the community had to help their physical needs. Yes, prayer can go a long way but sometimes that physical touch can ease the pain. Many people told me that the provision of meals has made an impact on the time they have been able to have with their family while the child is recovering has made times like these less of a burden and more of an enjoyment. I had one women tell me, “Sometimes it’s hard to accept the help people are trying to give you when you feel like you can be self sufficient. But people don’t mean to make you feel that way they want to help make things right and you learn to accept these things because now you know what it’s like to be on the other side of the…

    Women in the Odessey

    • 958 Words

One role of women in ancient Greek culture as portrayed in The Odyssey is subservient to men. For example, Calypso keeps Odysseus on her island. However, Zeus tells her to let him go, as Hermes declares, “Now Zeus commands you to send him off with all good speed” (5: 156. 125). She responds by protesting that Zeus keeps all the mortal women he wants. However, Calypso listens to Zeus and releases Odysseus. Calypso clearly wants Odysseus to stay, yet she still lets him go, on the orders of Zeus. Even though she is correct in saying the gods are unfair, Calypso must obey Zeus because he is a god. Earlier in the story, we hear Telemachus arguing with the suitors. He tells them he will find news of Odysseus. He also proclaims, “[I will] give my mother to another husband” after he has found news of his father (2: 100. 248). The phrasing, “give my mother,” implies that it is Telemachus’s choice not Penelope’s choice who and when she will marry. Despite the fact Penelope is older; she has to listen to Telemachus, since he is the man of the house. Later in the story, Telemachus again asserts his authority in the hall by saying, “go back to your quarters. Tend to your own tasks, /the distaff and the loom, and keep the women/working hard as well” (21: 435. 390-392) Not only does it show Telemachus’s power; it also shows the job of a woman, which is to spin in their free time. In addition, while the men are feasting and enjoying themselves, the women have to keep working. The women have…

If I had to pick one extracurricular activity to pursue in college, I would definitely choose club volleyball. Ever since I started playing volleyball in the 7th grade, I have been hooked. From that point on, the sport has become an invaluable part of me that has helped me grow into the person I am today. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team.” I was determined to work as hard as I could to be placed on an advanced high school team. Thankfully, my hard work earned me a spot on a state-winning varsity roster as a freshman. We went on to win two state championships, and I personally received an All-West Region award. In this way, volleyball taught me that teamwork, dedication, and perseverance…

I’m always honored to do a flyer for ministries that have the goal of reaching those that are lost. I tend to put more time and effort into them than my other projects, because of my love for Jesus Christ. I decided I would start to attend these community sessions on Monday it was only for an hour from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. In the first session I was asked to pray for those that came and I did. This group reminded me of how I was when I came to Christ I wouldn’t let anything stop me from getting feed spiritually. Some of them were teenagers, others singles, some families, it was beautiful to see them desire more of God in their lives; hear the questions and then fellowship with them once the word was given, prayer ended.…

Grandmommy resided in an assisted facility with many other elderly people who loved having visitors. Through that experience, i was able to immerse myself in the opportunity to serve at Autumn Leaves. My visits with the men and women at Autumn Leaves Memory Care Facility gave me a glimpse back to what I had experienced with Grandmommys friends. However, this time around I learned a lot about myself. A discovery was made that I have a passion for listening to others and exchanging stories. Often the patients would give me advice, whether it was about family, boys, or school. I listened to them tell me tales of a road trip they took with their brother or the thrill of starting their own company. Piece by piece i found myself in these stories. Very quickly it was apparent that there was a drive in me to make stories like these. Not recreate them, but have adventures of my…

As a part of community service program organized by my high school, I together with my other three friends had the opportunity to visit a women’s shelter home. Our task was to make the women in the shelter home aware primary health care. The program required us to teach the women about basic health and hygiene related topics like cleanliness, food and nutrition, and safe motherhood. We visited the women’s shelter home called “SAATHI” (meaning “friend”). Though I had been to orphanages before with my family and friends, it was my first visit to the women’s shelter home, so I did not have any idea about the likely situation there. We were quite eager to visit the home, so we set the date and time of the visit between us. The day finally arrived. We reached the place where the shelter home was located.…

Over the summer of 2015, I volunteered at Harmony Hall in Bassett, Virginia. Harmony Hall is a nursing home for the elderly. I had heard about this agency during the last couple of months in my senior year in high school from my friend, Kanan Patel. She had volunteered during the winter of 2014 and she instantly fell in love with the mission, the staff, and the residents. When looking for a place to volunteer, I came to her for references, and she quickly directed me to Harmony Hall. I began working with this agency the following summer.…

When I was finally a senior I decided to change my ministry to help with a local version of Habitat for Humanity. I found out that a local Boy Scout troop would let me help them repair houses even though I was not a Boy Scout. They welcomed me with open arms and we got to work right away. We completely remodeled the house and the old man was so happy. We brought back his human dignity by raising his standard of living. Human dignity is something that everybody deserves but not everybody gets, but in this case the man regained his human dignity and he was so happy that it made all of my hard work worth it. This semester I was taught all about human dignity and now I have seen both effects of it, a man without human dignity and at the end a man with human dignity and it is an unbelievable change. I am so glad that I got to help this troop this semester.…

Croix with my church group. We visited two sites, Queen Louise and Sister Emma cottage; both homes for children who have been placed there due to neglect, or abuse. Before this trip, I hadn't truly engaged with special needs children or adults and I was anxious. I met a young man named Evan*, he was nonverbal, confined to a wheelchair, and had higher level severe cerebral palsy. Even then, he could completely comprehend what was going on around him. As soon as we met, he started blushing. He indicated that he wanted to play a game involving his book bag. Evan would act shy and laugh when I looked in his bag, gasped and dropped it (he had diapers and a change of pants), something simple could make him laugh the hardest. Eventually our day was over and I felt changed. I learned so much from just my first day, I undertook a new challenge of getting out of my comfort zone to interact with…

The most important activity to me outside of school is my outreach program. This outreach program has been my rock and guide through high school. This program is designed to help under-represented high school students achieve their goals. This program helps students become successful and responsible through personal and academic enrichment, and I am one of those students. A lot of the focus is put on school and the main goal of getting into a good university. Even though it is much focused on school we also focus on the community and the environment. We do a variety of community service projects a month and even during the summer we are still doing community service. Two of the things we do very frequently is replant mangroves and beach clean-ups. Yes, school is important but this outreach program also teaches me that so is our community and our environment. This outreach program is so important to me because it has helped shape the type of person and student I am today. Before this program I didn’t care much about school but after going through some adversities and being in outreach my mindset changed. Outreach isn’t just a organization it’s a family and this family has been my support system all throughout high school. I personally felt like the outreach family was there for me even when my parents weren’t. This program has encouraged and given me tough love when it was needed. Being in outreach has pushed me to achieve goals that I never thought I could achieve. In the last four years I have learned a great amount of things about myself, life, the world, and how important my education is. I have learned a great sense of responsibility, ownership, and morals in outreach. The program has taught me to strive for personal and academic success. The biggest thing I have learned is that it is okay to ask for help. It doesn’t make me look weak to ask for help, it makes me stronger.…

The volunteer hours I did really opened my eyes to public generosity and how organizations work. I volunteered for the Kidney Foundation of Canada only once but it was enough. I volunteered with a friend, which made sitting in Sobey’s all day a little more bearable. I sat at a table, dressed up with posters, numerous pamphlets, and magazines on kidney disease and health. I asked shoppers leaving Sobey’s if they’d like to donate to the Kidney Foundation. Some people would walk passed without so much as a glance, but many others stopped to hear what we were and what the organization did for people. Sometimes people stopped on their own, before we even had a chance to ask the question. It really made me see the generous side of Fonthill and it made me really happy to see that people wanted to be a part of a difference.…
