My Family Heritage

In my family, our heritage is extremely important. From a young age, I was exposed to the German language and culture, although my parents and grandparents are not fluent speakers. Just a few words here and there were enough to capture my attention and soon I began to catch on to a few key phrases. As I have grown older, I have kept a special place in my heart just dedicated to my family’s heritage, which I have learned to appreciate more every year. As a senior in high school, ready to embark on the new and frightening journey of college, I value my heritage more than ever. I know that regardless of where I go to college, I will be further than just a fifteen minute car ride from my family. It has finally hit me that I will no longer be able
to make Stollen, traditional German Christmas bread, with my grandmother whenever I want to. Due to this realization, I have become more conscious of my culture and I have begun attempting to learn a little more about the language. Ultimately, I am becoming more involved in my family’s background both for myself and for my grandmother, who has always tried to keep the traditions in place. I know that it means a lot to her that grandkids, including myself, know and appreciate our culture. Overall, these traditions that define my family are the most valuable aspects of my life.
