My Father's Grit Story
Grit is described as courage and resolve and strength of character. My definition of grit is the ability to overcome challenging obstacles that appear in life. These definitions both sound like my dad. My dad has gone through a lot in life and has shown more grit than anyone I know. He is to this day my role model and an inspiration for all the grit he has shown.
My dad’s grit story started at really young age. It wasn’t like he was drafted into the army at any young, but the worst thing happened to any kid around his age (4). My dad had lost his dad to a very bad heart disease. My dad had to grow up without a father. He’s dad always wanted my dad to grow up and be happy and grow up successful. Now with his father dying his grades slipped, but with his mom being a school teacher and my dad’s ability to overcome such a challenge like losing his father. His grades improved to where he was offered a scholarship to nursing school.

He was only 2 years into medical school, and he was never really good at book work, but there was stuff my dad was good at. He was good with hands on learning. He went to school for mechanical engineering. He was able to graduate with a four year bachelor degree from the University of Wisconsin Platteville. Now having graduated from the University of Platteville Wisconsin my dad had moved to Indiana with love of his life my mom. It was hard moving for him because his whole family lived in Wisconsin and now he’ll be far away from them. Plus he moved into a new community and didn’t know what to

In the novel “True Grit” by Charles Portis, two characters in particular have the courage, roughness, and determination you associate with the term true grit. Mattie Ross, driven by her determination to avenge the death of her father, despite her young age, recruited and partnered with a retired lawman whom many thought was guilty, yet never convicted, of lawless killings. Mattie’s courage was obvious as she continued her journey in spite of the many hardships she met including having her arm amputated after being bitten by a snake. The other character, General Rooster Cogburn, who agreed to help Mattie was physically disabled and had a serious alcohol problem, yet he was determined to do whatever he had to do to earn the money he was promised.…

Grit is the strength of character and is seen differently by everybody such as how Dr. Duckworth sees it and myself. Dr. Duckworth states in her interview with “Ted Talk” that it’s how much passion a person has, how much stamina they have in achieving their long term goal. Unlike Dr. Duckworth I believe that a person’s mindset plays a major part in grit and I also believe you have to be optimistic and have the resilience to be a gritty person. Dr.Duckworth’s article on grit discusses the importance and the differences of grit.…

The first time I experience grit was when I first went skiing for my first time at Sundown, which is a ski resort near Dubuque. At first I did not like skiing, because I would always fall, but I was determined to be a good skier. By my second time at Sundown I started to get the hang of it. By my third night I could go down all the hills in a controlled manner, then I started to really enjoy skiing. I then found out if I keep on working and try my hardest on something it will always pay off in the end. Grit made me take something I dislike, and made it into one of my favorite things to do in the winter. Today I have been skiing for over 3 years. Even after I hurt my back skiing 2 years ago, I still went back the next year.…

    5. Grit, noun 1.abrasive particles or granules, as of sand or other small, coarse impurities found in the air, food, water, etc. 2.firmness of character; indomitable spirit; pluck: No, grit is not dirt, sand or other impurities. If compared to an impurity it would be an impurity of the soul, a need to be daring and have spunk. To Mattie grit isn’t something that can be seen, it is the way a person acts. Grit is not defined by words but by how ruthless you are and how much courage you have. In the novel True Grit many character have this type of grit and many don’t. This article also talks about the idea that people that have built grit will be successful in whatever they chose to do. Sometimes we like to do a lot of things at the same time thinking we are achieving what we want. The truth is that we won’t know if we could give more to what we are doing because we are not focusing on finishing one thing first. An example will be that sometimes we get a lot of classes to finish fast and we don’t pay the attention that is…

I agree with this story 100%. Thomas McGarvey was dealt a tough childhood and even blamed God for taking his father in the mining accident. He then took advantage of the opportunity that was given to him, and did something nobody else in his family has even thought about. He continued his education after 8th grade. In my career, I am going to take full advantage of the situations that are present just like McGarvey has. I am currently in the PT program but the first step is exercise science. I believe that in order to be successful in whichever path I end up taking, you have to be willing and able to take full advantage of the situations around you. In life, you do not and cannot make advances without someone willing to take the risk and in…

Grit, the display and actions of perseverance with strength, won't get you very far in life as you might think. You're not gonna have the urge to motivate yourself with ‘grittiness’ after you read what Professor Marcus Crede from Iowa State University has to say. Decide for yourself after reading this article if you concur with the Dr., and author, whose life work was devoted to the thought of grit and its repercussions, or if you side with the Professor at a college university who is in complete disbelief of this theory. Marcus Crede demotes Dr. Angela Duckworth’s life work on the study of grit, and her claim about how if you posses true grit that you are 98% more likely to succeed at anything you do. Which even Duckworth admits to the charge…

He thought about me and my future during what he thought was his last moment of life left. My dad’s recovery definitely impacted me in many ways. I couldn't bear to see my dad in misery. Thankfully, he recovered well mostly because of the occupational therapy he went through at Ruthe B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center. It was thanks to the many professionals in this field that my father was back on his feet again, and my family was happy at last. I thought about all the other people across the lifespan who suffer through injuries, illnesses, or disabilities that stop them from doing the things they want and need to do daily. It pains me to know that there are other families out there who have been and could be severely affected just as my family was. This is when I knew I wanted to become an occupational therapist for the sole purpose of helping people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health. I discovered my passion for occupational therapy as I went back to the rehabilitation center my dad went to for help. I gained a better understanding of this wonderful profession as I volunteered, interacted with the patients, and job shadowed the occupational therapist and assistants. I now hope to expand my education by attaining a bachelor’s in Kinesiology/Motor Behavior Program in order to be fully prepared for my graduate studies where I will…

If it was not for my father then I would not have known my ability to have grit. I have become more motivated to become a better person. I feel confident in that I can prove my father wrong in that I am a smart individual and will be successful. His words are no longer going to have the power to bring me down. It became a habit to hear my father’s words, so I started to focus more on a positive mindset on how I was going to get through hard situations that were similar to this. I anticipate to go through racial discrimination throughout these four years, and I know that when it does happen my reaction will be calmer and mentally prepared for ignorant people because of what I have gone through with my father. I will overcome this obstacle by ignoring and reminding myself that it is people’s rude comments that are motivating me to attack them with my success. There will be times where in my journey to success I will come across people that will make me work twice as hard to get the education I need because I am from a low income family, first generation, and a…
