My Favorite Champone Analysis
“My Favorite Chaperone” is a story of a girl named Maya and her family from Kazakhstan. They are immigrants that have moved to America and now live in Seattle, Washington. Maya is in 9th at Beacon Junior High. The story is about Maya wanting to go to go to the Spring Fling. In class, Maya gets a permission slip for the Spring Fling an all school dance. She is almost positive she will not be allowed to go, but she has a small amount of hope that her parents will let her. The only permission slip her parents have signed was for the gymnastics team. Maya loves the team, she competes in all the events. Her friend, Shannon, is on the team too. Maya is called into the office to talk with Ms. Johnson. Ms. Johnson tells Maya that Nurzahn,
Maya’s brother has been suspended for fighting. They do not know where Maya and Nurzahn’s parents are, so Maya has to contact her dad. When her dad gets to the school, Maya has to translate Ms. Johnson’s words for her dad. She did not translate them exactly, she made it sound like Nurzahn was not in too much trouble. A few days later, Maya is caught in the arms of Daniel. Daniel is a wrestler at Beacon Junior High and he is also the boy that Maya likes. David is Daniel’s friend, who also is a wrestler. Both boys are taking turns picking up Shannon and Maya to show how strong they are. When Daniel lifts up Maya, her dad pulls into the parking lot. Both Nurzahn getting into a fight and Maya being in the arms of Daniel made their parents furious at them. After a few days had passed, Maya’s mom had hurt her ankle during work, so Maya had to do her mom’s jobs after school. She also had to cook dinner at night. Maya stopped going to the gymnastics meets because her schedule was too cramped. She felt like she had to do the best she could since she had been in trouble. Nurzahn told Maya that he had an idea that might make her parents let her go to the dance. Maya did not believe it would work. She had lost all hope that she would be able to go.
