Throughout life children go through many changes that may or may not be obvious. Because children undergo these changes and develop in many different ways, it’s important to understand “why” in order to be able to make a connection between learning and experiences and how to best educate them. I am writing this essay to provide a description of my field experience and the activities involved in the experience. In this essay, I will also explain how different aspects of my experience relate to concepts that I have learned in the course. In addition, I will be reflecting upon the impact the experience had on me and the community. Finally, I will be addressing some areas of improvement along with best practices.
Field Experience (J.A. Walters Family YMCA)
I completed my field experience at the J.A. Walters Family YMCA which is based at Flowery Branch Elementary School. It is an onsite program that provides afterschool care to children grades k-5. The YMCA focuses on the development of the whole child through character building activities, developmental assets, and child’s learning experience. The demographics of the school was very diverse; it consisted of both boys and girls ages ranging from 4 to 11 years old. The groups were mixed according their grade level. For instance, a student that was six years of age but still in the kindergarten, would be grouped with that grade level. Basically, if you needed childcare assistance after school you were able to participate in the program. During the field experience, there were not any students who were physically impaired or had any limitations that would have prevented them from participating in the program.
