During my life I knew growing up and learning about history that racism and prejudice existed. However in the class Race and Ethnicity I was made aware of how in the human service field that as a human service worker that I need to be aware of my own personal beliefs and views and not allow any prejudice views of my own make decisions that may affect someone else. I learned that I need to be acceptable of others culture, beliefs and religions. The class was mainly a class of discussions and how people felt about racism, immigrants, different cultures, etc… It was a class that gave you a view of how other people felt as well.
One of my assignments was to write about my own culture experiences. I never put too much thought about where I came from or my own beliefs or traditions. However, while researching my family, I discovered more about who I am and how my family’s simple customs, traditions, beliefs molded me to become the person I am. My family has always helped others and I believe that is why I have felt the need to go into Human Services. It is a part of who I am.
In addition, another assignment that I was required to do was to learn about another culture. I chose to do it on the Greeks. I was made aware of so many different customs, beliefs, and traditions. The Greeks traditions and lifestyle has changed over the years however, they still hold own to most of their traditions. They have not let America take that away, and I think that is a great attribute.
The main thing that I learned in the course is that people should respect other people’s views, beliefs, and customs. All the hate and discrimination should be a
