My Grandfather's Shoes By Christian Garland: A Literary Analysis
I think that the narrative My Grandfather’s Shoes told by Christian Garland is an inspiring, bittersweet and entertaining story that has a great plot. The story was bittersweet because it is sweet that Christian earned his grandfather’s trust back and the money that he paid the grandfather with was put to a very good use. The bitter part of the story is that the grandfather died and Christian was very close with him so that must have been a really hard and sad time. This story was at the same time inspiring because, Christian started off being careless and spent money that was not his and someone else worked hard to earn. Then when he realized that using that money meant losing his grandfather's trust he would do anything to earn that back.

Eudora Welty's short story "A Worn Path" takes place on an early December morning which deals with a very elderly and frail black woman, Phoenix; and the hardships inherent in her life. Phoenix Jackson is the main character, she is characterized as a strong poor elderly woman because of her appearance, personality and determination. For example, the narrator states, that Phoenix wore “a dark striped dress reaching down to her shoe tops, and an equally long apron of bleached sugar sacks, with a full pocket: all neat and tidy, but every time she took a step she might have fallen over her shoelaces, which dragged from her unlaced shoes " (475). The dark striped dress and long apron made of sugar sacks symbolizes poverty because of her hardships in life; this is the type of clothing most Negro women slaves wore back in the slavery days. The darkness of her dress represents her state of depression. The stripes on her dress symbolizes the prison bars showing she was held captive as a slave for some time.…

The story I read and am writing my essay on is the book Hoops by Walter Dean Myers. The reason why I am writing this essay is because I like this is a great book. The book is about a seventeen year old boy named Lonnie, faces a difficult life with the harsh nagging of his mom and trying to become pro at basketball. Later on in this book Lonnie faces a really difficult decision if he wants to throw the game or if he wants to beat the opposing team. This is a great book because it teaches about friendship and trust. It also is good because it is exciting to read what decisions the character will make and what will happen after he makes it. This book teaches us how hard it is to live in poor places and other really important things.…

I really enjoyed the story “What you pawn I will redeem” by Sherman Alexie. What made it so enjoyable for me, was not only Jackson who is the main character but also the friends and cousins which were mentioned throughout this story. This story had great characters and a very great story line. Thanks to the main character I got to experience firsthand what it like is to be, not only homeless, but also an alcoholic. During this entire story I felt sorry for Jackson because he was trying his best to get the money for his grandmother’s regalia who passed away and he did not know how to get the money.…

The short story that I chose was "The story of an hour by Kate Chopin. The story is about Mrs, Mallards sister Josephine telling her about her husbands death. Mrs, Mallard took the death very hard, and was very depressed for sometime. Her husband Brently was in a railroad accident, and his friend Richard was in the newsroom when he read the list of the men who lost their life. When she found out she wanted to be alone, and asked that no one followed her up into her room. She would stare out the window and just look out at the view. She smells the trees, and hears a peddler screaming out. She is taking the death of her husband very hard.…

The most interesting short stories that caught my undivided attention were: “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot” by Robert Olen Butler. These stories were both fascinating and intriguing in the sense that they made me feel like if I was the actual character. You could feel the pain and anguish the characters felt, even the desperation. It got to a point that I felt pity for the protagonist whom in both stories where narrating. Here we can see how someone can feel so desperate that they think the only way out is by taking their lives. Both Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Robert Olen Butler created an incredible form of fiction that makes you question if the scenes in the stories can truly happen in reality.…

The short tale of Harrison Bergeron is something that isn't very new to me. Way back in high school, we were tasked to read this in one of our Literary Circles sessions. I took a quick look at it and particularly enjoyed how short the story was. Today, having finally read a good selection of interesting stories, I decided to take a deeper and much more complete look at it. I can definitely say that despite it being rather short, Harrison Bergeron was a story just oozing in meaning and symbolisms.…

This article was written to illustrate the common citizen of the colonies and their struggles, both good and bad, through the revolution. By writing “The Shoemaker and the Revolution” Alfred F. Young shows the mass civilian involvement that acted as a catalyst for the anti-British sentiment that swept the nation, and specifically Boston. Young uses George Hewes, a lowly shoemaker, as an example of the power each individual holds. Hewes went from a shy apprentice, too scared to speak up in front of John Hancock, to an outspoken patriot…
