My Grandma
Character sketch: My Grandma
Grandma is the most important person in my life. Her name is Zhang Yu Fang. She is very warm, kind lovely and facetious. Grandma is always happy and she has the most beautiful smile in the world. Everyday she would come home from either her friend’s house or shopping and cook delicious food for grandpa. One thing I will remember most was when she touched my head with her gentle wrinkled hands. It felt so warm and lovely. She’s the best grandma in the world.

She was a small woman, much shorter than I am mot much taller than my mom. She had pure white hair. Her hair was quite long. I know because every night she would comb it out, leaning forward and combing the hair from the back of her head down to the floor in long strokes that looked like they tied her arms. Another fact about grandma is that she likes to wear the traditional Chinese clothes, because she thinks it’s comfortable. They call them Silk Robes, because they’re made out of silks. In the winter she would wear a red jacket to go shopping because it’s not really cold in China. Grandma is also very healthy. She’s almost 65 years old and she would get up at 6am every morning and go for a walk around the park.

Grandma is a very kind and fun person. She used to tell me really funny stories when I was little and I could still remember a couple. She likes to laugh and she talks a lot. When you ask her something she knows, she would explain it in every detail to you. It gets kind of boring sometimes when she talks for 10 minutes, but I still respect her and listen to her. Grandma likes to make fun of grandpa a lot because grandpa would sometimes try to tell us a joke that’s not funny at all, and grandma would laugh at grandpa and tell him to go learn some better jokes. Grandma also loves to cook. She’ll go to a restaurant and taste the food, and then when she gets home she could cook the exact same thing. I remember when we visited her in China, grandma opened the door; she

Furthermore, as she comes to the realization of her connection to Chinese culture. The use of irony “but today I realize what it means to be Chinese. I am 36 years old. My mother is dead and I am on a train… I am going to China” exhibits her attempts to rekindle her ties with her culture. There is a sense of isolation evident as her mother was her last correlation to her heritage and in order…

Grandma Beck was a multi-talented, independent, hard working old lady. Even as an old lady, she was very active and passionate about one thing: working. She was by far the strongest person I had ever met. She had to support herself; she lived alone after my grandfather passed away (Which was ironically on my birthday July 15th, 1978). She slept with a loaded handgun in her bedside table and a police club shoved into the side of her waterbed. I was lucky to spend nine years getting to know her as my grandma.…

"Ah Mah" is a poem about the author’s grandmother. The author, Lim, describes her grandmother in detail and explains how her grandfather "bought" her grandmother. Lim describes her grandmother as a very small and thin woman (10-11). She gives the impression that her grandmother had a hard life even though it appears that the family had enough money. The fact that the family is Chinese is also very apparent due to the many references to Chinese culture that are made as Lim describes aspects of her grandmother’s life.…
