Athena had a pretty small family. Since Athena was born from Zeus forehead, her mother wasn't even Hera. Her brothers and sisters were not blood related but were considered family. One of these tales talks about a little girl who lived in Lydia. Her name was Arachne and she loved weaving. People thought she wove the most beautiful things anyone has ever seen. Arachne loved herself and the weaving she did. She began to praise yourself for her own work. One day Arachne called out that she was the top weaver in the world and even better then Athena herself. When Athena heard this, she came down from Olympus to the village where the little girl lived. The girl heard a knock at the door, and Athena was standing outside. Athena told the girl she must die after offending her talent. She gave Arachne one chance, and that was to compete against Athena in a weaving contest. When the contest began, Arachne went first. She wove beautifully, and the people clapped at her work. Athena was next in line. Athena wove with the clouds, sunsets, and all the colors in the sky. The people dropped to their knees in awe. Knowing she lost, Arachne went to a grove of trees, and Athena followed her turned Arachne into a spider.
