My first job when I become a psychologist is to get my patient through to first stage of the Hero’s Journey, which is separation.
In the first stage my patient would be unconscious and in a positive or negative state. With a patient with depression or anxiety they would most likely be in a negative state of mind. My job as a psychologist would be to guide my patient out of that state by giving them support, encouragement, and techniques to help them. Some patient with mental illness may not have a support time to help them through what they are dealing with. Just having a person to talk to and vent about situations is helpful when you don’t have anyone around when they have the skill to help. I believe encouragement is important because a patient may not feel that what they are doing is valid, giving them encouragement might change the way they look at the situation. Dealing with anxiety simple task such ask questions in class can be difficult. Giving the techniques to help them get over any fears that will block them from doing what they have to
do.
My second job would be to get my patients through the second stage of the Hero’s Journey, which is initiation. In this stage my patients will start to realize the potential they have had all along. Everything will not change over night. The obstacles that the faced will start to become easier. The techniques they have been using will become like second skin. Their confidence will start to build into a health state. The things that the felt that they needed reinsures won’t even matter because they know what they are cable of doing and nobody can tell them differently. Happiness will start to arise from there spirit. At the end everything that they believed that the could not do or that had to work hard to be able to will be a piece of cake and they will be ready for there final stage
My third job would be to get my patients through the third stage if the Hero’s Journey, which is the dragon. In this stage my patient would be conscious of his situation. In the previous stage you were faced with mine battles to prepare them for the ultimate battle. They would be in the right state of mind to conquer any obstacles they face to defeat there dragon. My job would be to reinsure them of where there are and to help them with any set backs or relapses. Patients with mental illness can relapse at any moment. It can be a simple trigger or fear of failure. It would be my job to help them realize that a relapse is not the worst thing that can happen. Yes it’s a set back but it doesn’t not has to be a huge one if you handle it the right way and use the things I have given you to get through it. At this stage my patient will no longer need me as much as they needed my in the previous stages, I would only be back up if they every need me to help them or had another journey that they need help on.
The hero’s Journey applies to my life goals because I want to become a psychologist and help people through their Hero’s Journey. In my future career as a psychologist it will be my job to help patience’s face their dragons. By giving them support, encouragement, and techniques that they need. Help them face the things that they felt that they could not face on their own. And also help with any sets backs and relapses that may occur during their journey.
